I worked with children ages 2-12 when I was a swim instructor at Goldfish Swim School. I taught beginning to advanced swimmers from various backgrounds.
Importance
Working with children reminds me that life is about more than my own wants and desires. As a student, it can be hard to see the larger picture. The majority of my friends are students who are dealing with the same pressures and struggles as myself. Helping a child overcome their fears in a way helps me see I can overcome mine as well. Working with bubbling, excited children reminds me that happiness can be found in small ways throughout the day. Seeing children from vastly different backgrounds work together and support each other illustrates that society draws lines around each of us but that the greatest achievements need a variety of viewpoints.

Impact
People tend to be self-focused. Young children help put things into perspective. Because children do not have the same agency as adults, as an adult working with children can be a reminder that the world is much bigger than one life.
