I double majored in biological chemistry and geological sciences at the University of Michigan for a couple of reasons. First, I have been interested in biological chemistry from a young age thanks to my parents. Chemical and Engineering News as a staple in my home; I was constantly reading about the latest discoveries and theories. Second, studying geological sciences opened the doors to oceanography at U of M. I gained an appreciation of earth sciences as a whole, while increasing my desire to focus on marine sciences. Together, these two concentrations give me the scientific background to succeed in most science fields. I have the ability to think on an atom, molecular, organismal, population, or worldwide scale over the period of a picosecond to as long as billions of years.

• Marine Microbiology: metagenomic analysis, bacterial abundance and productivity in environmental samples, collection of samples at-sea

• Biological chemistry lab: chromosome conformation capture data set analysis, recombinant DNA methods, PCR, gel electrophoresis, miniprep

• Research vessel Laurentian in Lake Huron: side-scan sonar, chlorophyll extraction, open water collection using Niskin bottles, zooplankton net collection, benthos PONER collection, environmental analysis

• Field geology in Wyoming: field mapping, stratigraphic measuring, rock identification

• Technology and education: website design and maintenance, curriculum design and maintenance, experience teaching young children
