Animal Protocols and Compliance

All users of PPC Services must have an approved animal use protocol.

There are two options for obtaining UCUCA approval for using our services:

1) Transfer animals to the PPCs animal protocol. In this case, the users protocol does not need detailed information on the procedures. Instead, users are required to indicate in their protocol that the procedure will be performed by a fee for service core facility. Animals will be transferred back to the users protocol after the service is completed.

2) Add the appropriate PPC staff to your existing approved animal use protocol. In this case, the procedures must be detailed in the users protocol. PPC staff can provide assistance in providing the detailed procedure for the animal use form for a new protocol or for an ammendment.

Please feel free to contact PPC staff if you have any questions.

About the University Committee on Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA)

University policy and federal law require a review of projects for humane treatment and judicious use of vertebrate animals. At the University of Michigan, adherence to this policy and federal law is assured by the University Committee on Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA) through review of the Animal Use Application, conducting animal facility and laboratory inspections, and providing training and guidance for animal care and use personnel. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the UCUCA Office staff and Committee members work hand-in-hand to ensure and promote the humane and judicious use of animals in research, teaching, and testing.
