Dr. Adewunmi Nuga, MD, Ph.D

Hi! I am Adewunmi (Onafuwa) Nuga.

I grew up in Nigeria, and moved to the US as a teenager. I have always been interested in how micro-organisms work to cause infections, and how human bodies work to find infection. After completing my bachelor's degree at Concord University in Athens, WV, I took a position as a research technician in the Telesnitsky lab. This, really, was my first foray into laboratory science, and I found the work challenging and extremely rewarding, and I remained curious about learning as much as I could about molecular biology in general, and HIV in particular. I have since completed my PhD (University of Michigan, 2007), post-doctoral fellowship (University of Michigan, 2012), and MD (Oakland University, 2016). Throughout this time, it has become more and more evident to me that in order to effectively address infectious disease affecting human health all over the world, training must be available to individuals who live in, or come from areas of the world where some of these diseases are endemic. Capacity building and reciprocal exchange are key to achieving this, and MIDIS has given me the tools and experience for me and many other trainees from all over the world to become leaders in research and healthcare.
