Short description:
The project highlights the need to understand cohesion amid fragmentation, inequality, and exclusion. Prompted by Moldova’s divisive pro-EU referendum and emerging segregation lines—particularly concerning the rise of extremism and radicalism—alongside enduring societal rifts (e.g., ethnic, linguistic, and regional) in Romania, the study aims to assess social cohesion levels, identify factors that support or hinder it, and develop policy frameworks to address ethnic, linguistic, regional, and economic disparities. Addressing the challenges of defining and measuring social cohesion—and accounting for its multidimensional nature and micro-macro dynamics—this project introduces an innovative methodology that integrates advanced longitudinal and cross-national quantitative analysis with in-depth policy evaluation and a participatory approach to designing public policies. Through systematic examination and comparative mapping of social cohesion in Moldova, Romania, and other relevant countries, the project surpasses current research in the field, aiming to offer a comprehensive perspective on cohesion. The anticipated impacts include a deeper understanding of social cohesion, evidence-based recommendations for inclusive policies, and an expanded dialogue on social resilience. The findings will provide actionable strategies to strengthen cohesion within and between Moldova and Romania, aligning policy recommendations for Moldova with the New European Cohesion Policy.
