The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta is hosting a Summer School in Algebra
The event, sponsored by the Department and the Faculty of Science, aims to introduce undergraduate students to modern algebra at a high, yet accessible level.
Students will attend lectures by experts in their respective areas on a variety of algebraic themes, which will provide a taste of graduate school. The aim is to show participants the beauty and relevance of modern algebra.
There will be mini-courses on
Algebraic groups
Class field theory
Elliptic curves
Representation theory
These courses will be given by Dr. Charles Doran, Dr. Nicolas Guay, Dr. Jochen Kuttler and Dr. Adam Topaz, all faculty members at the University of Alberta.
We will provide local (dormitory style) accommodation and subsidies to travel.
The school targets mainly students finishing their third year, but students finishing their second or fourth year will also be considered: any undergraduate student with a solid background in linear algebra, groups, and rings (one course in each area should suffice) and with a strong interest in algebra is encouraged to apply.
Advance registration is mandatory for students outside the University of Alberta, and admission to the summer school is not guaranteed.
