In order to facilitate exposure to a broad range of pediatric conditions, most PGY-1s on pediatrics will spend two weeks on the inpatient service (CTU) at the Stollery, and two weeks at a community hospital (Grey Nuns or Misericordia) for neonatal and ambulatory exposure. Residents in some programs will spend four weeks on the inpatient service, as this was felt, by their program director, to be more appropriate for their eventual areas of practice.
Orientation
Information regarding Orientation at your respective site(s) will be sent to you via email. Please see the Orientation Schedule for additional information.
Call
During the two weeks on the inpatient service, each PGY-1 will be required to do up 2-4 call shifts during the block including one weekend shift. During a four week rotation at the Stollery, you will be required to do up to 7 call shifts, including 2 weekend shifts. You are welcome to submit call requests, and every effort will be made to accommodate requests submitted by the deadline, however due to the complexity of the schedule we cannot guarantee that all requests will be met. If you have specific mitigating circumstances, it is strongly recommended that you contact the Chief Resident(s) well in advance. It is your responsibility to inform the Chief Resident(s) of the nights that you are unable to be on call for any reason (including protected teaching time, flex time, etc). If this information is not received when you are asked for call requests, and you must take time away from the rotation it is
your responsibility to switch the call.
Typically, residents do not do overnight call at the community-based sites, although this remains at the discretion of the educational coordinators at each site.
Days Away from Rotation
PROTECTED TEACHING
Family Medicine residents will be excused from clinical duties for their regular academic day (2nd Wednesday of each block), but if they are scheduled to be on-call that night, they are expected to report for handover at 5 pm. Family medicine residents will not be scheduled for call the night before their academic day.
Residents in other programs will also be excused from clinical duties for their protected teaching time, provided that they inform the supervising physician and/or senior resident of these times at the start of the rotation. If a resident does not wish to be on-call the night before a protected teaching session, he or she must request this during the call-request process – it will not happen automatically.
CLINIC DAY BACK
After extensive discussion with the Family Medicine program directors, it has been decided that Family Medicine residents will be excused from rotation to attend their clinics.
DAYS OFF IN LIEU
As per the PARA agreement, a resident who works a statutory holiday during his or her pediatric block is entitled to take a day off in lieu. Residents are encouraged to take this day in the same block as the holiday, whenever possible. This day must be scheduled in consultation with the supervising pediatrician +/- the senior resident. For administrative tracking, the appropriate form should be completed and sent to the pediatric PGY-1 administrator for approval by the PGY-1 coordinator. If you are scheduled to the Stollery during this time, you should also inform the Pediatric Chief residents of your request.
OTHER DAYS AWAY
Residents may request to be excused from one or more days of the rotation for other reasons than detailed above (e.g. personal days, days off in lieu of stat from other blocks, conference time, etc.). While these are certainly important and valid reasons for being away, and requests will be honored wherever possible, it is important to recognize that they reduce the amount of time for clinical exposure and learning during the rotation. This is particularly significant when the rotations are already split into two-week blocks. To this effect, if a resident misses two or more days of his or her CTU or community pediatric for reasons other than post-call, protected teaching, or a stat day in lieu (for a holiday that fell during that same two-week block), that component of the rotation will be considered “incomplete” and the resident may be required to make up the missed time and/or complete an appropriate supplementary learning activity. For administrative tracking, the appropriate form should be completed and sent to the pediatric PGY-1 administrator for approval by the PGY-1 coordinator. If you are scheduled to the Stollery during this time, you should also inform the Pediatric Chief residents of your request.
FACILITIES
Students and residents are invited to use the pediatric resident lounge (4H2.12) during their Stollery-based pediatric rotations. There are a large number of individuals that use this space, so a few important ground rules apply.
Storage
There are lockers labelled for off-service residents/medical students where you can store your things during the day.
This area is not completely secure, so please do not leave any valuables.
Computers and textbooks
There are a number of reference textbooks available. Feel free to use them, but please do not remove them from the lounge.
The computers are there primarily for clinical use – if you are using them for personal reasons and someone else is waiting, please let them go ahead.
The printer is not for personal use.
Remember that the computers are connected to the AHS network and internet use is monitored.
You must abide by AHS internet use guidelines.
Kitchen
You are welcome to use the fridge, microwave, dishes etc, IF you clean up after yourself.
Please label all items in fridge
Please do not leave food in the fridge for longer than 24 hours. The fridge is regularly gone through and items will be thrown out.
