Posted below are examples of lab exercises that I use in my lab courses.
AUBIO 111 - Integrative Biology I
Membrane transport. This lab has its origins in an old (pre-1990) anonymous University of Alberta lab manual for BIOL 301 - Cell Biology. I have edited the lab manual since then a number of times with editorial contributions from past lab demonstrators for AUBIO 130, including Nicole Salamon, Krista Schulmeister, Angie Brocke, Isabella Wong and Alan DeSilva. For 2015 the lab manual underwent a major revision when AUBIO 111 was introduced. Our newly appointed lab coordinator, Jody Rintoul, took on the task of revising this lab assignment in consultation with myself. The other lab assignments are listed in the course syllabus.
AUBIO 336 - Histology
Blood. I wrote the lab manual for this course a few years ago using slides donated by a colleague on the North Campus of the University of Alberta. This is one sample exercise from that lab manual. The other lab assignments are listed in the course syllabus.
AUBIO 338 - Developmental Biology
Angiosperm development & fern photomorphogenesis. I edited this lab manual from an anonymous pre-1990s University of Alberta lab manual for BIOL 302 - Developmental Biology. This is one sample from that manual. The other lab assignments are listed in the course syllabus.
AUBIO/AUCHE 380 - Biochemistry I
Determination of the Ea of tyrosinase. This is a lab I developed as an extension of the commonly used tyrosinase assay. The other labs I developed for this course are listed in the course syllabus. These labs will be redeveloped for the new course AUBIO/AUCHE 388 - Biochemistry Laboratory which will be offered as a three-week block course after Augustana transitions to a new academic calendar structure (look on pages eight and nine here in Dean Berger's 2016 report to the community).
AUBIO/AUCHE 381 - Biochemistry II
Lipid profile of a natural source. I produced this lab assignment based upon techniques I used during my doctoral studies.
