English 102

Course Description:

This course is a continuation and extension of English 101 with an exploration of essay forms with particular attention to interpretation, analysis, and synthesis of fiction. In addition, there is an emphasis on analytical reading, writing, critical thinking, and research methodologies.

Course Objectives:

  • Reinforce college-level writing skills.

  • Reinforce skills in research methodologies.

  • Synthesize writing skill in the production of academic discourse.

Student Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will successfully be able to do the following:

  • Employ the conventions of Standard Written English (SWE), as evidenced by competency in format, grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and sentence structure.

  • Write a variety of essays that demonstrate progression in college-level writing skills.

  • Synthesize critical reading and writing skills in the production of analytical essays that demonstrate synthesis of primary and secondary sources.

  • Synthesize academic research methodologies and college-level writing skills in the production of a research paper.
