Professional Overview:
I am an educator with a passion for literature, composition, and logic, as well as a deep appreciation for the social sciences, life sciences, and history. I believe in the power of a well-rounded education and the importance of cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. My academic journey began at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), where I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. My teaching career started at CSUSB and extended to Central Texas College (CTC) and the United States Navy, where I sailed the world teaching U.S. sailors aboard various naval vessels. I also served as the lead General Education Instructor at Platt College in Riverside, California, before becoming a full-time, tenured English Professor at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC).
Currently, as an Extension & Engagement/Community Development Specialist at the University of Missouri Extension, I lead initiatives in community development, focusing on programs like Veteran R.E.A.D.S., which I piloted to support veterans transitioning to civilian life. My holistic approach combines elements of bibliotherapy, narrative exposure, and critical literary analysis to address veterans' complex needs, fostering literacy, self-reflection, and community growth. My work extends to collaborative efforts with the Historic East Neighborhood Coalition (HENC) in the Kanssa City Metro and other community initiatives.
Personal Background:
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, I am a fan of the Chiefs, Royals, BBQ, bass fishing, country music, and jazz. After spending 26 years in Southern California’s Inland Empire, I also developed a love for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers, Mexican food, and beach volleyball. My diverse heritage—Hispanic on my mother’s side and Anglo on my father’s—shapes my appreciation for varied cultures and traditions.
An avid outdoorsman, I enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, and, above all, hiking. My adventures have taken me to trails and mountains worldwide, including Mt. Fuji in Japan and the Pacific Crest Trail along the West Coast. I am also an enthusiastic traveler, having explored destinations like Singapore, South Korea, Italy, Greece, and more. At home, I cherish time with my family—my wife, Natalie, our children, Jameson and Presley, and our Chihuahua, Rico—enjoying quiet evenings of cooking, watching Netflix, or stargazing.
My professional expertise and personal experiences enrich my teaching, enabling me to offer students a broad perspective on cultures, communities, and worldviews.
