Walled Lake Schools Philosophy of Music Education

Music is a vital and basic component in human cultures. It engages the total individual in acts of creating and performing, and involves the intellectual, the intuitive, the emotional and physical being.

Music education is an essential discipline, accessible to all students regardless of their background, talents or inherent abilities. The essential life skills of responsibility, collaboration, flexibility, and problem-solving are developed through music education, along with appreciation and respect for others' ideas and personal expressions. Additionally, music provides a unique opportunity to awaken those personal expressions and enables students to meet their individual potentials.

From these expressions and from exposure to increasingly complex experiences in focused listening and music making, children discover the intrinsic value of music. This discovery provides them with skills needed to form an aesthetic interpretation of life's events on a deeply emotional and personal level.

Music provides a means to explore cultures. It reflects aspects of human thought, action and experience, enhancing students' abilities to make connections across subject areas. By understanding historical and cultural forces that shape social attitudes and behaviors, students are better prepared to live and work in communities that are increasingly multi-cultural.

The richness of music contributes to higher levels of thinking and learning, which help to develop individuals who see clearly, hear acutely and feel sensitively. The fundamental purpose of music education is to develop skills, knowledge, concepts and sensitivity for the sake of knowing and conveying the highest levels of human experience.
