Ways to support LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT at home:
Prompt your child to use language to ask for things they need (example: “Can I have __?”
Model new vocabulary during everyday activities (example: “Get in the vehicle”)
Read together- can be books, magazines, words you see in the environment, any words! Ask and answer questions about the story. Use pictures to practice naming objects and things happening in the book.
Ask your child 'wh' questions (who, what, where, when). Example: "what do you want for dinner", "where is the toothbrush", "when do we go to bed", etc
Play “Simon Says” to practice following directions and body part awareness. Use spatial words such as: above, below, beside, next to, under
Play “I Spy” and use descriptive words to have child find the object
Hide objects around the house and give directions for child to find the item
Have a scavenger hunt to find items with different descriptions (examples: cold, wet, soft, old)
Use sequencing vocabulary for tasks (Example: “First get soap, next rub hands together, then rinse hands and last dry hands”)
Give student directions to follow around the house. Example: "go find me something that has red on it", "go find something hard", etc
Practice speech sounds at home using objects or things around the house
