Academic Assistance

UPDATED 9 2022 Academic Resources.pdf (7).pdf

If you are struggling in an academic course, or need extra help, here are some ideas that work for nearly all students.

1. Use an agenda book or electronic device to record assignments in one location. Students often forget to do assignments or to turn assignments in because they have multiple books and binders with papers tucked away in multiple locations.  There are multiple ways to keep yourself organized and record assignments, so pick a system that works for you!  Google Keep is a tool that can be utilized for note taking, making lists, setting reminders, make voice recordings, etc.

2. DOING or COMPLETING homework. Many students struggle to do their homework.  Some struggle to remember to turn it in. Set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to do your homework.  Find a quiet spot without TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and SnapChat to focus on your work. Without distractions, homework will go much faster!  If you forget your assignment, check your teacher's website to see if it is posted.

3. Make good use of class time. When a teacher gives you time in class to start working on an assignment, take advantage of this time! Many students pack up for the day or use this time to relax, and then forget to do the assignment later. Get as much as you can done in class, so you don't have as much to do at home.

4. Have you talked to your teacher? Teachers are never as scary as they seem.  Sometimes they don't know how much you are struggling until they grade your test. See if the teacher can come in before or after school, or if you can visit them during your lunch or study hall for extra help. They also might have extra credit or extra practice materials you can take advantage of.

5. Use the internet! There are unlimited websites and YouTube videos on ANY subject! Need extra help on a topic that might be on your test this week? Google or YouTube it and see what information or short video clips you can find. Extra explanations, practice problems or information might make the overall concept more clear to you.

6.  Open Learning Lab (OLL) & Math Lab.  The OLL & Math Lab are open all 8 periods of the day.  Students may visit the OLL in Room 801 for assistance in organization, Science, Social Studies, and English.  The Math Lab is located in Room 507.  If you want to work with a teacher or peer tutor during your study hall, ask your teacher for a pass.
