HAGAN STEM FAIR 2020

Calling All Young Scientists!

Do you like to experiment? Have a thirst for knowing why and how things happen? Here's your chance to show your stuff!!

The Fifth Grade is excited to sponsor the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) fair at Hagan Elementary!

The STEM Fair is required for all students in grade 5.

The STEM Fair will be held on March 3, 2020. Projects will be judged in the morning and viewed by other students in the afternoon. Families are invited to attend the evening session from 6:30-7:30 pm.

What makes a good STEM FAIR project?

A good project involves the student in a journey of discovery, driven by curiosity. Your learning in Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) typically starts with proposing a question or hypothesis and doing some background research. Your project can start from something you learned in school or something you are interested in all on your own. Pick something you are curious about! Ask questions about the world around you. Be sure that your STEM Fair project represents your work. The fair is your chance to teach our community about what you know. Your ideas matter!

Categories of projects for the STEM Fair:

Science investigations: Answer a question about the world by planning and completing an experiment (or series of experiments) that follows the scientific method.

Engineer/design an invention: Design and make something to solve a problem. You will follow the design process to help make a new product to solve a problem.

Report on a scientist: Write your own biography of a scientist that has made a contribution to our world.

Build a model: Create a model of a scientific concept, human body system, bridge or mechanical device, or any other related representation.

The hardest part of most STEM fairs is deciding what your project is going to be. Our advice is to pick something that really interests you and something that you care about.

Also keep in mind how much time you have to do your project and how easy it is to get all the materials you will need to do it. Take good notes, stay safe, and have a great time experimenting!

Ways to find project ideas:

Look at lists of science categories and pick one that interests you, then narrow that down to a project. Pick something you are curious about! Ask questions about the world around you like:

What would happen if...?

Why does that happen?

What is the best way to...?

Brainstorm with a friend, teacher, parent, or other adult. Think about why it would be important to know more about your topic.

Think about current events. Look at a newspaper.

HAGAN STEM FAIR Rules and Guidelines

  1. The STEM fair is required for all students in grades 5.

  2. Project work is to be done outside of school, unless you have permission from your teacher.

  3. Projects can be experiments, scientific models, or inventions. Each project is expected to have a written component.

  4. Table-top display space will be provided for you. Wall space for posters or securing projects is not available. Everything must fit on a table space of approximately 36" wide and 30" deep. If your project features water or any other material that leaks, it will be emptied.

  5. Projects must be brought to the school on Monday, February 24th.

  6. Science fair will be held on March 3rd in the Hagan Gym. Parent session will run from 6:30-7:30 PM.

  1. The STEM fair team has the right to refuse any project that they deem is not an appropriate topic.

  2. No live animals may be brought in on fair day. Animal and human subjects must be treated humanely.

  3. Mold must be completely enclosed at all times.

  4. Materials and construction must be durable. Since the projects will be viewed by all grades, project design should accommodate the safety of little fingers and avoid small unattached pieces.

  5. Students are not allowed to bring any explosive, flammable, or poisonous materials to the fair. Acids, caustics, corrosives, other chemicals, or any substance not normally allowed in school cannot be displayed. Instead, use models, demonstration facsimiles or photographs. No burners or flames.

  6. All science fair participants are to respect other participants and their projects.

How Adults Can Help

Ask questions to help achieve focus and clarity. Guide the students rather than lead. Encourage students to make their own decisions and use the inquiry approach.

Be a helper by answering questions on the "how to." A student might require help remembering how to set up a graph or chart. Show them how but don't do it for them.

Be an assistant when students need extra hands. Some tasks are just too difficult to do alone. Help them organize time and information.

Be a coach for students who need help. Show or remind them how to use information and assist in finding appropriate search tools.

Be a runner for various materials that the student might need. A student might need materials for the project or to visit a site or interview an expert to enhance their study.

Be a wise listener when students want to share ideas. Allow the student to discuss progress and show interest in the student's project.

Be creative and encourage students to use materials that they may have at home. Recycle and reuse.

Most importantly, be an encourager! Allow students to do their own quality work. Students will perform best if they know they have support from teachers and parents. Let them know how well they are doing and how proud you are of their accomplishments.
