The curriculum is designed to reduce aggressive behavior and increase social competence in children. Socially competent children cooperate, show consideration for others, manage their feelings with appropriately, and have some success in solving problems. The three major units of the program are Empathy Training, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving.
The Second Step lessons feature engaging black-and-white photographs that help teach children about empathy, emotion management, and social problem solving. The situations help children understand feelings and learn how to solve problems in positive ways. Children have opportunities to discuss their own experience.
