TED Talk: How autism freed me to be myself: How Autism Freed Me to be myself- Ted Talk
Discovering Psychology: Updated Edition: Prominent researchers — Pavlov, Thorndike, Watson, and Skinner — have greatly influenced today's thinking about how learning takes place. This program examines the basic principles of classical and operant conditioning elaborated by these renowned figures. With Dr. Howard Rachlin of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Dr. Robert Ader of the University of Rochester.
The Brain: Teaching Modules: This module opens with statistics and a description of autism and how the disorder has been viewed historically. Studies now support the theory that autism results from a lack of normal neural growth during prenatal development. Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University, severely autistic as a child, is presented as someone who overcame her autism and managed to use her way of perceiving the world to her advantage.
Temple Grandin discusses Autism Spectrum Disorder on TED.com: "Grandin's books about her interior life as an autistic person have increased the world's understanding of the condition with personal immediacy -- and with import, as rates of autism diagnosis rise. She is revered by animal rights groups and members of autistic community, perhaps because in both regards she is a voice for those who are sometimes challenged to make themselves heard."
The world needs all kinds of minds | Temple Grandin: Autism activist Temple Grandin talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids.
See the world through her Asperger eyes: Wendy Lampen at TEDxDelft: Wendy Lampen (Belgium, 1969 -- @lampadedromy) works as a lecturer for a university of applied sciences. She got diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome herself. Trained as a teacher in English, History and Ethics she later on worked with adolescents with autism in a school setting. Next to being an MA in autism, she extensively studied neurotypical (non-autistic) behavior in order to understand people better. It gave her insight into what really set her apart from (most of the) others: sensory processing and its ongoing processes and the way the two brain types give meaning to the world they experience. This heightened awareness made her start her own company with her (neurotypical) partner. From her international experience in how different cultures look at autism or 'disorders' in general, Wendy is an advocate for a neuro-divers society. She focusses on the competences and the possibilities of the different brain types and how they each can contribute to a richer life.
Autism — what we know (and what we don't know yet) | Wendy Chung: In this calm and factual talk, geneticist Wendy Chung shares what we know about autism spectrum disorder — for example, that autism has multiple, perhaps interlocking, causes. Looking beyond the worry and concern that can surround a diagnosis, Chung and her team look at what we've learned through studies, treatments and careful listening.
Three Myths of Behavior Change - What You Think You Know That You Don't: Jeni Cross at TEDxCSU: Jeni Cross is a sociology professor at Colorado State University. She has spoken about community development and sustainability to audiences across the country, from business leaders and government officials to community activists. As a professor and consultant she has helped dozens of schools and government agencies implement and evaluate successful programs to improve community well-being. In this talk, she discusses her work around changing behaviors.
