Great Music Resources for Students

Music Resources for Students

We have used many of these tools and resources in the music room to help us learn various music skills. There are so MANY valuable websites and apps available that encourage musical development!

Music Chromelab has several great music games that we have used in the music room. *There are several that are age appropriate for different grade levels:

PK, Kindergarten (Rhythm, melody maker, Kadinsky)

Grade 1-4 (Rhythm, melody maker, Kadinsky, Sound-Waves, song maker, Spectrogram, Strings)

Rhythm Maker:

[Any Age]

Create your own rhythm patterns and see how they sound

Kadinsky:

[Best for PK- 2]

Draw using different types of lines (short, long, smooth, etc. ) then press play

Melody Maker:

[Best for PK-4]

Create a melody (tune) by tapping one note in each column

Song Maker:

[Best for Grades 1-4]

This one combines Melody Maker and Rhythm Maker together. This allows you to create your own song. Try putting more than one note in each column.

Staff Wars is a Mulready favorite and can be found in the Apple store for download or downloaded for free here. This interactive game is a fantastic way for students to practice their note reading skills in a fun way.

(Grades 2-4)

Classics for Kids has several activities for students to Listen, Learn and Play. Go to the bottom of their homepage to explore what they have to offer!

Grade 4 students use note flight which is a tool to create and compose your own music using online software. If students have the capability they can also print and perform their creations.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has several activities available. Here you can also see demonstrations of various instruments and past concerts.

In the game room section of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra website there are MANY great games for kids. Percussion Showdown is always a favorite! See if you can match rhythms using a drum to try to beat Polly the Cowgirl.

Read aloud stories are another great music activity for students. They can be sung or even turned into a rhythm activity. In Kindergarten we performed Dr. Suess' Hand Hand Fingers Thumb this year to celebrate Dr. Seuss Week.

Students can also be creative and think of different ways to make their own instruments at home using household supplies.

Another great website is the San Francisco Symphony's Fun with Music website which lets students create their own music. Check out the Composer section to start to make your own music! Their is also an instrument matching game that shows the different instruments of the orchestra. (Ages 6+) *This requires Flashplayer which not all computers/tablets will be able to use.
