Montonbury

This is the home of tradesfolk of all kinds – close enough to the traderoutes to take advantage of cheap wood, leather and metals, but not so far south as to be out of reach of the supplies from Tyrephene eighty miles to the North – close enough to drive a cart if drivers took two shifts and started at daybreak. Here wheelwrights, coopers, boot-makers, make their shops beside apothecaries, hatters and brewers. The main street is bustling with activity.

The countryside between and about for 50 miles in all directions is dotted with small-holders, goat-farmers and a few small villages.

A) Shrine and Graveyard

A small shrine to Avandra stands at one side of the town, barely a Temple. To the rear is a graveyard.

B) Town Walls

These only go a few hundred feet either side of the road, and are there mainly to assist with tax collection, more than keeping out any invading forces. There is a small guard post at the gates.

C) Guards barracks and Guard Captains office.

This martial building looks out of place in Montonbury.  It's a sitepost from Fastogan, and there are 12 guards here who bunk here, and sometimes occupy the ready-room.  The Guard Captain, Phillip Tennerey has an office in the building.

D) Shire Reeves House and Offices

The towns shire-reeve Pasko Verna, is responsible for collecting the taxes from the local trades, and below his large home on the hill is an office where he keeps his books. Adjacent to the office is a large custom store, which may at times have goods held for taxation.

E) The Yoke and Barrel, and Stables

There are two inns in town offering a few clean rooms. The Yoke and Barrel at the south end of town near the stables and brewery – the odor is an acquired taste, the taproom is noisy and rooms are typical. Westgrim Gloat, the human innkeeper – a very large man – will throw out particularly unruly miscreants if necessary so its normally a good place to rest ones head.

Gloat lives in a modest house just north-west of the Inn itself. Neighbouring him on the roadway are a wheelwrights and a coopers – stores run by his sons Allun, and Glois Gloat.

South of the Yoke and Barrel are 3 stables – the closest one used by paying guests at the inn, one over the road used by the Guards, and the southernmost run by Sylus Fontonglade a lanky half-elf horseman who will sell a reasonable mount to any with the gold.

F) Temple of Pelor

There is a Temple of Pelor with a few Clerics apprentices living on the grounds. It is run by one Abbot Bedestine Bladelancer. His house is a large manse on the hill overlooking all of Montonbury.

G) Rymers Select Imports

Faz Rymer, a obnoxious tiefling, runs this store with its dubious collection of magical items, many displayed in locked glass-windowed cabinets.

H) The Wheelwrights Rest

The Wheelwrights Rest is less colourful than the Yoke and Barrel but has a tub in each room and in the upstairs common-room there is a coal stove to boil water. Rooms there are 2GP and Tyran Fewgage the Dwarven innkeeper will arrange most comforts on request.

I) The Rovers Roost

This low-rent roadhouse will serve a reasonable meal, and offers cheap rooms where a trader can keep an eye on his horses and cartload of goods tied up in the lot outside. Cherryapple Highfount – a halfling and her two girls run the place, and live in the house next door.

J) Forrisons Fine Goods

This large store sells saddles, boots, mundane leather goods (including armour), clothing, simple weapons (shortbows, swords) and a huge range of dry goods of all kinds. Its run by Rimbard Forrison and his wife Talia.

K) The Common, Montonbury Market

A short trail from the main road leads to this large flat area where a thriving market appears on two mornings of the week. There are a few permanent stalls here too, where fresh vegetables and farm produce can be had for reasonable prices. In Spring the Montonbury fair is held here, and a maypole, gypsy fortune tellers, clowns and colourful characters bring the place to a near riot. At other times children play here, or clerics from the nearby temple stroll in contemplation.

L) Ruined Temple

This mossy ruin is visible from the road, just north of Montonbury.
