Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
When are CHE 129, 131 and 152 offered?
CHE 131 is offered during the fall, spring and summer.
CHE 129 and 152 are only offered in the fall.
How can I determine my chemistry placement?
Your OCPP score can be found in your transcript in Solar under "Chemistry Placement Level".
Level 3 with a math co-requisite of MAT 123 allows you to register for CHE 129.
Level 3 with a math co-requisite of MAT 125 or higher allows you to register for CHE 131.
Level 3.5 and the appropriate math requirements allows you to choose to register in either CHE 131 or CHE 152. Only students that do not have AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 can obtain OCPP level 3.5.
Level 4 allows you to register for CHE 152. Only students with AP Chemistry score 4 or 5 can obtain OCPP level 4.
The absence of a Chemistry Placement Level in Solar indicates that you have not completed the appropriate objective for the course you should register for.
Do I need to complete the OCPP process if I have already taken an AP in Chemistry?
Yes, all students must complete the OCPP process. If you earned a 1 or 2 or 3 in AP Chemistry, you need to complete the CHE 129/131 objective to enroll in CHE 129 or CHE 131 (depending on your math level); if you earned a 4, or 5 in AP Chemistry, you need to complete both the CHE 129/131 and CHE 152 objectives. If you did not obtain AP Chemistry 4 or 5 but wish to enroll in CHE 152 you must complete the three objectives CHE 129/131, CHE 152, and CHE 152-Supplemental.
Do I need to complete the OCPP process if I am a continuing student (and not a freshman)?
Yes. Every student must complete at least the first level of the OCPP process.
Do I need to complete the OCPP process if I've completed it before?
No, but many students mistake "working for some time" on the OCPP course with "completing" the OCPP process. To check whether you have completed the OCPP process you should be able to see a "Chemistry Placement Level 3, 3.5, or 4" in your course history in Solar. If it does not appear, you must complete the OCPP process.
Is there any cost associated with the OCPP process?
No.
What are the benefits of CHE 152?
Completion of the chemistry requirements after only three semesters (in contrast with the four semesters required in the other tracks).
Early access to important courses in your major after only three semesters. In particular students in the Life Sciences can take CHE 312 (Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences) in their 4th semester, while Chemistry majors can take CHE 375 (Inorganic Chemistry) in their 4th semester.
Enrollment in the Molecular Science sequence guarantees you a slot in the Molecular Sciences Laboratory. Each of these lab courses are 2 credits courses.
The classes in the Molecular Science course and their labs are considerably smaller than the classes for the other tracks.
