Guidance and Instructions for Using Mastering Chemistry

Please read this page very carefully!!!

All students registering for CHE 129, 131, or 152 must complete the appropriate level of the Online Chemistry Placement and Preparation (OCPP) process using the Mastering Chemistry software. This process is used both for your placement into these courses as well as to ensure your adequate preparation.

The Mastering Chemistry Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP course comprises three levels: the CHE 129/131 Objective, the CHE 152 Objective, and the CHE 152 - Supplemental Objective. On average, it may take a student up to six hours (of non-continuous work) to complete each of the objectives. Please note that you can log-out from Mastering at any time, and login again at later time (or day).

While enrollment in the Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP Course is free of charge, it is important to note that after enrollment students have at most 12 weeks (84 days) to complete the required objectives (although in most cases the deadlines set up by Academic Advising will be due before the 12-weeks access-code expires).

Which objective(s) you have to complete of the OCPP process is determined as follows.

Which objectives of the OCPP course do you have to complete?

(a) students with AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 must complete the OCPP Objectives CHE 129/131 and CHE 152. These students cannot register in CHE 129 or CHE 131.

(b) students without AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 (either because their AP score is 3 or lower or because they have not taken AP Chemistry in high school) that wish to enroll in CHE 152 (and continue with the 3-semester Molecular Science sequence) must complete the objectives CHE 129/131, CHE 152, and CHE 152-Supplemental. After completing the 3 objectives, students in this group (b) can also opt to enroll in CHE 131.

Chemistry 152 is only offered in the Fall semester.

Very Important Advise When Working on the OCPP Objectives

In order to complete an objective, you need to answer all the items in the objective correctly; in other words, your score for the objective needs to be 99% or higher. This can only be achieved by never clicking on the "Reveal Answer" option that appears below each question. Revealing the answer cancels further answer submissions on the question (you have up to 30 submissions) and sets the score in the objective under 99%. If your score when completing an objective is less than 99% you will have to retake the objective from scratch (you can only do this up to 4 times following the first attempt on the Objective).

Registration Instructions to the Mastering Chemistry Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP Course:

To register for the Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP Course follow instructions below.

1.   Go to the webpage: https://mlm.pearson.com/enrollment/raineri80834

2.   Sign in with your Pearson student account or create an account. When entering your personal information, please use your correct complete first name and last name, using a capital letter for the first character in both names. Please note that later, when you first access the Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP course, you will also need to enter your Stony Brook ID as information: this is a 9-digit number between 100000000 and 200000000. It is extremely important that you enter your complete and correct information in your registration; failure to do this will lead to failure in processing the completion of your OCPP work, thus not allowing you to register into your first Chemistry course in the Summer or Fall 2024 semester at Stony Brook University.

Note: sometimes during the registration steps sometimes the software asks for the Mastering chemistry Course ID. The course ID is raineri80834 (and not the hyphenated-six-words Access Code below).

3.   On the "Register" page select "Access Code" option (on the left column) and then type the course's access code:

DSCMPM - FONDA - LEECH - PSEUD - SHAWM - JADES

Extremely Important: Please note that your access to the account will only last 12 WEEK at no cost. You must complete your coursework within your 12 Week access window (no extensions available).

4.   Select Go to my course.

5.   Select Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP Course from My Courses.

Any registration or tech support needs should be directed to Pearson Support immediately.

Pearson Support is available 24/7 here: https://support.pearson.com/getsupport/s/contactsupport

Provide them the course ID: raineri80834

Save the Case # you receive.

To sign in later (i. e., to continue your work another day):

1.   Go to https://mlm.pearson.com

2.   Sign in with the same Pearson account you used before (using the same Pearson username and password you used previously).

3.   Select Summer/Fall 2024 OCPP Course from My Courses.

To repeat: While enrollment in the Summer/Fall 2024 course is free of charge, it is important to note that after enrollment the student has at most 12 weeks (84 days) to complete the required objectives (although in most cases the deadlines set up by Academic Advising will be due before the 12 weeks access code expires).
