Please read this page very carefully!!!
All students registering for CHE 129, 131, or 152 must complete the appropriate level of the Online Chemistry Placement and Preparation (OCPP) process using the Mastering Chemistry software. This process is used both for your placement into these courses as well as to ensure your adequate preparation.
The Mastering Chemistry Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP course comprises three levels: the CHE 129/131 Objective, the CHE 152 Objective, and the CHE 152 - Supplemental Objective. On average, it may take a student up to six hours (of non-continuous work) to complete each of the objectives. Please note that you can log-out from Mastering at any time, and login again at later time (or day).
While enrollment in the Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP Course is free of charge, it is important to note that after enrollment students have at most 12 weeks (84 days) to complete the required objectives (although in most cases the deadlines set up by Academic Advising will be due well before the 12-weeks free access-code expires).
Which OCPP objective(s) you have to complete is determined as follows.
Registration in CHE 129 requires completion of the CHE 129/131 Objective (and registration in MAT 123). Students with AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 and/or students with Math Placement Exam with grade 3.5 or higher, or students registering in MAT 125 or higher cannot register in CHE 129. The same applies to students registered in MAT 119. Chemistry 129 is only offered in the Fall semester.
Registration in CHE 131 requires completion of the CHE 129/131 Objective (and either Math Placement Exam with grade 3.5 or higher, or have already successfully completed MAT 123). Students with AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 cannot register in CHE 131; they must register in CHE 152. Chemistry 131 is offered both in the Fall and Spring semesters.
Registration in CHE 152 requires different levels of OCPP completion depending on students having AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 or not:
(a) students with AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 must complete the OCPP Objectives CHE 129/131 and CHE 152. These students cannot register in CHE 129 or CHE 131.
(b) students without AP Chemistry with score 4 or 5 (either because their AP Chemistry score is 3 or lower or because they have not taken AP Chemistry in high school) that wish to enroll in CHE 152 (and continue with the 3-semester Molecular Science sequence) must complete the objectives CHE 129/131, CHE 152, and CHE 152-Supplemental. After completing the 3 objectives, students in this group (b) can also opt to enroll in CHE 131.
Chemistry 152 is only offered in the Fall semester.
In order to complete an objective, you need to answer all the items in the objective correctly; in other words, your percentage score for the objective needs to be 99% or higher. This can only be achieved by never clicking on the "Reveal Answer" option that appears below each question. Revealing the answer cancels further answer submissions on the question (you have up to 30 submissions) and sets the percentage score in the objective to be under 99%. If your percentage score when completing an objective is less than 99% you will have to retake the objective from scratch (you can only do this up to 4 times following the first attempt on the Objective).
In all that follows it is very much recommended that you use a desktop or laptop computer with the Chrome browser instead of a tablet or phone. Unless the settings are carefully adjusted, the Safari browser has problems with the visibility of the Mastering Chemistry pages.
The Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP Mastering Chemistry Course is embedded in the Stony Brook University's OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 Brightspace site. Therefore, in order to register on the OCPP course you first need to access the Brightspace site.
First time you access Brightspace: You access the OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 Brightspace site by first going to the Stony Brook University Brightspace login page and clicking the "Launch Brightspace" button. In the new page, towards the top, there is a thick red bar with several menus; please click the "Discover" menu. You will then see a number of Stony Brook University Brightspace courses, each one of them inside a rectangular frame. After clicking on the course OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 link you arrive at a page that shows a blue "Enroll in Course" button. Please click on the button and carefully enter your information. Up to this point you have gained access to the Brightspace site, in which the Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP Mastering Chemistry course is embedded.
Accessing the OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 Brightspace site after the registration: you can access the OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 Brightspace site at other times by going to your Brightspace access page, and under "My Courses" selecting the "Placement Exams" tab: the framed OCPP Chemistry Placement 2026 link becomes available; by clicking on it you are able to enter the site.
Further instructions on how to register in the Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP Mastering Chemistry course are given on the Brightspace site.
To repeat: While enrollment in the Summer/Fall 2026 OCPP course is free of charge, it is important to note that after enrollment the student has at most 12 weeks (84 days) to complete the required objectives (although in most cases the deadlines set up by Academic Advising will be due before the 12 weeks access code expires).
Please note that Mastering Chemistry does not work well with the Safari browser in Apple computers or tablets. Pearson (the company responsible for Mastering Chemistry) recommends that you use the Chrome browser.
