SMV Mission Statement

St. Mary's Visitation Catholic Parish School exists to direct children toward God and toward Christian service

to society through Catholic religious formation, academic challenge, and continuous

improvement.

General Rule of Thumb for All Classes

For the most up to date homework assignments, please check your student's assignment notebook every day

or the Virtual Homework Board tab in the upper left-hand corner of this page. Thank you!

Dear SMV Parents and Guardians:

(8th grade parents- please also see the attached FAQ letter on the bottom of the page)

¡Saludos! I hope you all had a wonderful summer! I look forward to getting acquainted with my students and kicking off the new school year with new Spanish excitement!!

Along with cultural topics, some curriculum highlights first semester include:

6th grade- greetings, numbers, Central American cultures and geography, dates, classroom commands and objects

7th grade- adjectives, clothing, AR verbs, extended family, describing age, possessive

8th grade- demonstratives, South American cultures and geography, SER vs. ESTAR, tener expressions, weather, hacer

Second semester we will be continuing through the curriculum and covering advanced topics and concepts while incorporating even more Latino and Spanish culture.

Please remember the materials your child will need for Spanish class are: binder and notebook just for Spanish use and a zip-loc bag for flashcard storage.

Please also remember that fluency takes many years of study and living abroad to develop, so be patient. Your child is learning Spanish "poquito a poco"-bit by bit! Because of the limited number of class days for Spanish and the developmental level of the students, we do not spend as much time on grammar, and reading and writing, as a traditional first year high school program. (Retention of grammar and vocabulary is much greater in a 5-day-a-week program.)

What you can do at home: In order to reinforce what your child learns in class, I ask that you review vocabulary with your child daily for a minimum of five minutes per day and that you encourage your child to share what he or she learns in Spanish with you on a regular basis.

I hope that you have a chance to look at the work we will be doing in class as their binders and activities are coming home!

Please remember that you are also welcome to contact me at spanish@stmaryeg.org to discuss your child’s Spanish progress or with further questions.

Thank you again for recognizing the importance of learning Spanish in today’s diversified world!
