Welcome to 4th Grade!
Our In School Classroom Policies and Procedures
Attendance: Students are expected to be in the classroom at 7:45 or will be marked tardy. This is especially important on Mass days Mass: We have Mass on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:00.
Lunches:Snacks: Students will have a BRIEF snack time in the morning. They are to bring their own SMALL SNACK (no candy or juice). It is very important to bring a water bottle each day. Students are to notify the teacher before 8:00 if they are taking hot lunch or they forgot a cold lunch.
Behavior: We will work together the first days of school to review school and classroom rules/expectations and consequences. Students will be given warnings and behavior issues will be communicated via notes home, emails, and/or phone calls. I will work together with parents, child, and if necessary, administration to help each child succeed and be the best he/she can be.
Communication: It is very important that students and parents routinely check our class webpage on the school website for class information. Go to www.stmaryeg.org and click on School, Staff, and then Class Website; 4th Grade . You are also strongly encouraged to check Powerschool for information regarding grading.
Grading: All grading is based on mastery of 4th grade Archdiocesan standards. Not all work will be graded.
Performance Scale/Goal Indicators include the following and will be used to communicate performance;
Mastery of Standards Demonstration of Learner Behaviors
(4 = Above and Beyond/Advanced/Exceeding /Student Initiated and Self-Directed)
3 = Proficient/Meeting
2 = Developing
1 = Emerging/Not Evident
*Whenever possible, a teacher will use a rubric/scoring guide stating the criteria necessary to determine a given grade
Materials and Classwork: We will be using a binder to keep organized. The assignment notebook should be checked over and initialed each evening. The Assignment notebook will be checked regularly for parent initials. Binders should be kept in an orderly manner and we will periodically help students organize their binders.
Opportunity Knocks: A student may bring home classwork with a bright pink note attached indicating an opportunity to reach mastery. Once a student completes the additional tasks, parents will be expected to initial and review the sheet with their child in order to help develop responsibility, good learner behaviors, and study skills.
Homework: Homework will be given regularly, Monday-Thursday. As a guideline (per the Archdiocese and SMV Handbook), 4th Grade students can expect to spend no more than 90 minutes on this work . Occasionally there may be short/long term projects. Regular reading and practice of facts is expected. Please communicate to us any concerns about time spent on homework. We will work together to help your child meet learning goals!
Vacation Policy Grades 3-5: Please make every effort to schedule your family vacations during the planned school vacation breaks. If that is not possible and students will need to miss school, then students will ONLY receive their math assignments ahead of time to take with them. The rest of the missed work will be organized on their desk for them to complete when they return. They will have a week to make up the work. If the work is not completed within a week, a standard score of "1" will be entered in Powerschool for those assignments. Students are also expected to make up any assessments that were missed.
Birthdays: Students are welcome (it is not mandatory) to bring a treat to share with the entire class for their birthday. (Weekend birthdays may be celebrated on the Friday or Monday after their birthday. Summer birthdays may be celebrated on the half-birthday or at the end of the school year.) Treats should be prepackaged and individually wrapped (store bought only) to be shared during snack or lunch time. This will ensure that classroom instructional time is respected and used wisely. (The Birthday Student may have free dress on the day they celebrate. Refer to the Student Handbook about dress code.)
In 4th grade there are nut allergies so Treats must be nut-free! or you may wish to consider non-food treats to share instead...
Dismissal: Students MUST have a note if there is to be any change regarding dismissal (walking, bus, car pick up, etc.) If a student is going home with another student, BOTH (or ALL INVOLVED) STUDENTS MUST HAVE NOTES. Students without notes will be sent home their usual way. Please note that only students that ride the same bus may go home with each other.
