READING

At the beginning of each week, we will read a story from the reading series. In the classroom we will have activities and worksheets to focus on new vocabulary, practice the skill (ex. problem – solution) for the week, and review phonics skills. Each Friday we will have a 12 question test which includes defining boldface vocabulary from the story, comprehension questions, and three short answer questions. The activities, worksheets and quiz will be assessed with a point system. We read the story whole group, in partner(s), and listen to the story each week. If at any time you want your child to re-read the story they may take their book home.

We will also have novel groups throughout the year. During this time, the students will work in small groups to discuss their chapter book and complete their novel packet.

The students will also complete 5 reading response projects this year. Each project will have a specific genre, they will need to find a book. The reading response project is worth 50 points, each. The students will complete this project at school during class time and/or study hall.

The book you choose must be:

    • A chapter book (or one with very few pictures)

    • A minimum of 150 pages (minimum of 100 pages for a biography)

September-April:

Reading calendars are sent home at the beginning of each month and due at the beginning of the following month. If your child reads 500 minutes for the month they will be awarded with 10 extra credit points in Reading.

*** Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each day. It will establish a love of reading and help them academically. ***
