Math

Miss Jonas will be teaching Math to all 5th graders.

It’s only through practice that students gain mathematical fluency and proficiency. We will be building and improving our math skills from fourth grade. Our math series provides us with the tools to meet the needs of all our students. We will be pre-testing each chapter and grouping according to the results. Each child should be working at their level. Math homework will be given most nights (Monday - Thursday) with two quizzes and one test per chapter. There will be some projects to help us integrate math into the real world, and plenty of notice will be given for those. All grading will be based on a point system. Most homework will be 3 points (this is based on effort, not amount correct), quizzes about 50 points and tests about 100 points.

Primary learning objectives:

    • Place Value

    • Multiply Whole Numbers

    • Divide by one and two digit divisors

    • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals

    • Expressions and patterns

    • Fractions and decimals

    • Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions

    • Measurement

    • Geometry

The students will have a daily workbook (Simple Solutions) to provide extra practice for skills already learned. Each day (Monday - Thursday) the student will complete 20 math problems. We will correct each assignment the next day. Each Friday the students will be given a short quiz reviewing the information that was covered this past week. Students will be given time in class to work on Simple Solutions, but if it is not completed, it will be homework due the next day. One point will be earned each day for Simple Solutions and the weekly quiz will be worth 15 points.
