Below are some easy, inexpensive ideas for making sight word practice FUN! I hope you enjoy!

Sight Word Cups

Hide a small object under one cup. Have your child guess where the object is hidden by first reading the word on the cup, then checking below it. Try to find the object in less than three guesses. Note: I especially like this game for practicing similar-looking words (ex: was, what, were, went).

Sight Word Pathway

Cut up some paper or use flashcards to create a sight word pathway. See how far you can travel along the path without making a mistake. (You may even want to place a "treasure" at the end of the pathway!)

Sight Word Candyland

If you already own the game Candyland, just write a sight word on each of the playing cards and VOILA! You have a sweeeet new sight word game to play together!

Sight Word Hopscotch

Sidewalk chalk makes everything more fun! Players must read the sight word before hopping on each space.

Sight Word Twister

Tape a sight word to each dot. Players must read the word on the dot before lowering a hand/foot onto that space.

Sight Word SPLAT!

Call out a sight word. Have your child find the word, read the word, then hit the word with a fly-swatter! SPLAT!

Note: It works great to use a Dollar Store shower curtain and draw on the flies/sight words with a permanent marker.

Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe

Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe is a wonderful way to work on a few specific words that are giving your child trouble (see below). Or, if you want to review several words, just write one word in each box before you begin. This way, players must read the word in the box before placing an X or O.

Sight Word Legos

If you have Legos at home, challenge each other to build the sight words!

Sight Word Balloon Toss

Start with one sight word balloon. Pass the balloon back and forth trying not to let it hit the ground. Read the word each time you hit the balloon. Then add another balloon. And another! See how many balloons you can keep in the air while reading the words correctly! You can also play this game (or some variation of the game) using beach balls!
