FAQ
Kindergarten @ Cooper Elementary
Can I come have lunch with my child?
Parents may come have lunch with their child on Wednesdays only. Our lunch time is 10:15am. Just remember to check in at the front office and sit at the “Visitors” table with your child (the last table by the red doors).
Where is the lost-and-found and when can my child go there?
The lost and found is located across from the cafeteria doors. Students may go there before school to check for a lost item.
Should I send lunch money?
No, lunch money is not needed. All students get free breakfast AND lunch this year! All you have to do is fill out the lunch form in the beginning of the year packet. All students qualify.
Should I pack my child a snack?
Yes. Students have snack in the afternoon before dismissal. Each student brings his/her own snack to enjoy and, according to district guidelines, all snacks must be healthy. Examples of healthy snacks include cheese, fruit, veggies, yogurt, and pretzels. We have water fountains in our classrooms and ask that you do not pack any drinks, except for water. If you are packing both a snack and a lunch for your child, please help us out by making sure the snack item is clearly marked as “snack.” Thank you!
Can I send cupcakes or treats on my child’s birthday?
No. According to the district handbook, this is not allowed. However, you may send a goodie bag with non-edible items, such as small toys, pencils, erasers, etc. to send home at the end of the day.
Do kindergarteners have homework?
Yes, they do! Students will receive a homework calendar the second full month of school. Each day, students complete the appropriate assignment for the night. It goes home on Monday and is due Friday. Kindergarten homework assignments are not intended to be long, but they ARE intended to be meaningful! Homework assignments also aid students in preparing for their weekly sight word quiz on Friday. Thus, it is imperative you help your child keep up! In addition to sight word quizzes, homework will also be checked for completion on Friday. Please make sure your child’s homework is complete and returned.
What do the conduct colors mean?
Pink = Outstanding
Purple = Awesome Job
Blue = Good Job
Green = Ready to Learn
Yellow = Slow Down
Orange = Think About It
Red = Parent Contact
How do students earn prizes from the treasure box?
Students earn treasure box by consistently displaying citizenship and responsibility at school. Any donations to the treasure box are very much appreciated! (ex: bouncy balls, slinkies, stickers, pencils, etc)
How can I volunteer?
Pick up a volunteer packet from the front office, fill it out, and allow about a week for a background check. Once this is complete, you can start volunteering! We are always in need of volunteers and we would love to have you!
When should I schedule a parent/teacher conference?
Parents will sign up for their beginning-of-the-year conference time in October. Notices will be sent home. HOWEVER, any time you have a concern about how your child is doing with his/her homework, his/her schoolwork, or his/her behavior please feel free to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher. We truly believe in collaborating with the parents of our students and we will find a time we can meet! Scheduled phone conferences are also an option.
That being said, because of our supervision duty to our classroom and desire to maintain confidentiality for all students, please do not try to have unscheduled conferences with us in the morning before school or during dismissal. We appreciate your understanding on this matter!
Can my child wear any kind of shoes to school?
Some days students have P.E. and/or recess on the field. Thus, we ask you send your child in close-toed shoes that are comfortable and stay on their feet. Thanks! J
