1984, Part 3 Questions, pp. 247-326
Must include textual support for all answers. I.e., quotes from the book.
3 sentences minimum and 1 supporting quote for the question assigned your group, and all groups also answer question 6.
1. Do you believe that Winston loves Big Brother at the end of the novel? How do you know?
2. Explain how Winston could betray Julia and no longer have any feelings for her.
3. Literary Concept: Irony. Even though O'Brien deceives, betrays, tortures, and brainwashes him, Winston does not hate O'Brien but sees him as a friend. How do you explain Winston's "peculiar reverence" (p. 299) for O'Brien?
4. What do you think are the motives behind O'Brien and the Party's particular treatment of Winston?
For #4 consider:
-why they watch him for seven years
-why there are three stages to his "reintegration"
-why they don't just kill him
-why he ends up with an easier job that pays more
5. Prompt: Imagine that you are O'Brien. Write a short report explaining the results of Winston Smith's reintegration into the Party and recommending what future action, if any, should be taken. Try to mimic O'Brien's way of thinking and talking in the report.
6. Making Connections: What relevance does 1984 have for readers today? Point to specific circumstances or potential dangers in your world that Orwell warns against in 1984.
