The Sparta High School Instrumental Music Department/BANDS consists of several ensembles.

In addition to the course offerings at Sparta High School, students may audition for the following honors groups:

Sussex County Band North Jersey Junior Region Band

North Jersey Senior Region Band All-State Band

All-Eastern Band North Jersey Junior Region Jazz Band

North Jersey Senior Region Jazz Band All-State Jazz Band

Assessment of instrumental ensembles is often a challenging task for the director because much rehearsal time is spent with group activities that are difficult to measure objectively as individual contributions. However, the grading system outlined in the school handbook as well as individual contribution and improvement will be considered as follows.

Positive contributions include:

Individual shows energy and concentration in rehearsal

Exhibits good posture

Students are prepared for class with music, pencil and instrument

Marks music and participates in class discussions/rehearsal evaluations

Evidence of home study-student brings music and instrument home on a

consistent basis with improvement indicated

Negative contributions include:

Music not prepared or memorized

Individual talks in rehearsal

Student is a distraction to others

Poor posture

Forgets music/instrument

Does not mark music as indicated by director

Takes poor care of his/her personal or school owned instrument

Tardy to rehearsal

Absence from performance (20 points)

On all levels, the following grading procedures will be followed:

Quizzes/Tests, Classroom Work and Technique

This includes written and performance assessments, as well as rehearsal technique.

Lessons:

All students are required to attend lessons.

Each marking period, the student will be notified

as to how many lessons will be required.

Care & Maintenance of School and Personal Equipment

This includes, preparation for class, evidence of

personal practice, and care and maintenance of school and

personal equipment.

Materials required for class include:

Folder Pencils-markings in pen are not acceptable!

Instrument and care equipment Handbook/lesson schedule

*As well, there will be no gum, food or hats allowed in class.

**School owned instruments will be assigned in working order. Other than overhaul maintenance, the student will be responsible for any repair needed while in their possession.
