Course Description:

This class will help you improve your English skills and social-cultural knowledge based on your needs. If you participate actively in the class, you will be better prepared for life in America, to get the job you want, and to gain opportunities in higher education. Your teacher is here to help you.

Course Objectives:

Listening: You will learn how to listen and observe to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. You will learn to understand conversations and messages in English better.

Speaking: You will learn how to speak to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. You will learn to improve your speaking skills for common everyday communication.

Reading: You will learn how to read basic words to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. You will build your vocabulary and improve your ability to read and understand short paragraphs, instructions, stories, and job or medical history forms.

Writing: You will learn how to write to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. You will learn to write clear sentences in simple paragraphs and short notes.

*Technology: You will learn some basic computer skills to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. If you do not already have computer skills, you will learn the basic parts of the computer, learn where and what the keys on the keyboard do, and practice using the computer mouse. There are many computer-learning programs for you to practice both your English and your computer skills at the same time.

6. Grammar: You will learn how to use basic English grammar to help you as a member in your family, work, school, and community. Here are some of the grammar points covered in ESL3A and 3B. You will learn how to connect sentences, use question words such as How much, How long, make requests, edit for subject-verb agreement, review verb tenses (simple present, simple past, present continuous, future), learn to use the past progressive, study how to use "used to", comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs and how to use modals.

What You will bring to the class?

1. 3 ring notebook for handouts you will receive in class and a computer disk for Lab class on _____________ and your smile and hard work.

Performance Outcomes:

In order to pass to the next level, You must work hard and do all your class work and homework. Your homework, tests, writing assignments and class work will be used for the course evaluation.

Rules for the Class:

1. You must come to class on time and stay until the end of class. Do not come late. If you miss more than 20 minutes of the class, the teacher will mark you a “tardy”. Two tardies will become an absence. If you are absent six times, your teacher will ask you to stop coming to class.

2. If you are sick or have an emergency, please call your instructors to let them know

3. Please plan to study one hour everyday to prepare for each class and do your home work assignments.

4. You need to show respect to other students and to the teacher by listening to them when they are speaking. Do not talk or make noise when someone is speaking.

5. You should try to use English outside of class everyday: talk to people you meet, listen to the radio or TV programs, read one article in an English newspaper, and write short messages.

7. If you have a special problem, seeing, hearing, walking or any other disabilities, or if you need special arrangement in case of an emergency, please tell the teachers so we can help you.
