Effective course design begins with planning and evaluation. The majority of today's learners expect that their learning experience will match what they have experienced in K12. They expect that technology, digital materials, and gamification of concepts will be embedded in the course curriculum and active learning experiences in the delivery of the content. This requires that the teaching delivery style moves to the "Guide on the Side" approach from the "sage on the stage" model of teaching. The intentionality of creating high impact and transferability of learning experiences requires careful planning and regular evaluation of delivering our content.
In this section, you will learn the the phases to intentionally develop a course from beginning to end that can be applied to face-to-face, blended, and online (synchronous/asynchronous) courses.
Let's begin by discussing how the The Traditional Course Design Model tends to follow the instructor-led approach to delivering content. To begin, we will define what "traditional" course design encompasses.
Select your materials (book, OERs, etc)
Identify relevant content coverage by focusing on competencies and/or focus topics
Plan the learning experience with lesson plans and how you will deliver your content
Create assessments that show mastery of content.
From the student experience, this approach to teaching is rooted in the passive learning style. Meaning, that the instructor expects that the student simply absorbs what is shared with little to no interaction by the student.
The next few pages are devoted to providing information on how you can be more intentional in designing the learning process for all learning modalities from face-to-face, to blended, hy-flex, and online (synchronous or asynchronous). A guide on the side approach to teaching is rooted in facilitating active learning activities that are both high-impact and have high transferability in all learning environments. As a teacher using this approach, it is pertinent that you think about the learner experience and how you can most effectively facilitate exceptional learning experiences for your students. The next few pages and the information in the Instruction category can help you build your teaching and learning skill set while providing equitable education for our students.
