What is writer's workshop?
Writer's Workshop is when writing skills are taught and students are given the opportunity to work on and try those skills.
What does it look like?
Each child is given a writing folder. Writing folders consist of writing pieces written by the student.
During this time students come to the carpet and engage in a mini lesson geared at teaching students different writing skills and strategies.
When the mini lesson is over students are given the opportunity to go back to their seats and practice the mini lesson skill or strategy. This is the student's independent writing time.
During this time the teacher will conference with students one-on-one or meet with small strategy groups.
When independent writing time is over, students meet back on the carpet and share their writing pieces with a partner.
What is conferencing?
Conferencing is when a teacher works one-on-one with a student to help strengthen a specific skill.
What is a strategy group?
Strategy groups are small groups of students who all need help with learning the same skill or strategy. It is the same as conferencing but done in a small group setting.
