What is word work?
Word Work is the phonic or word and letter study portion of a balanced literacy program. During word work students learn letters, letter sounds, and letter sound combinations. Students accomplish this through letter study, Fundations, Words Their Way, phonological awareness, and sight words.
What is Fundations?
Fundations is a phonics program that incorporates pictures and storys to help students learn letter names and their letter sounds. It uses a multi
What is Words Thier Way?
Words Thier Way is a program that promotes letter sound recognition through picture sorts and groupings. Students practice different sounds by sorting pictures that match those sounds.
What is phonological awareness?
Phonological awareness is the idea that students can hear, distinguish, and manipulate the sounds in words with no emphasis on their letter representation. For example, it is important that when a child hears the word "cat" they can distinguish that there are 3 separate sounds in the word. Many times, beginning readers hear some of the sounds in words. If students can hear all the sounds within a word then spelling becomes better when writing, and the idea of sounding out words when reading becomes more fluent because saying all the sounds together will make sense to them.
What are sight words?
Sight words are words that students should know by sight. Many sight words are words that do not allow for individuals to sound them out, there for they are words that need to be instantly recognizable when reading. In kindergarten, we have 25 sight words.
