St. Marys J4 B XV

Away

It was a dark and gloomy day down in the CYM grounds Saturday afternoon and with a lack of coaches on the marys sideline it was even gloomier, but someone had to take charge of the situation, the responsibility being laid to rest at the feet of Jimmy, Vinny and Bobby alas even with their combined knowledge of the game the result just didn't go our way.

Although there never looked to be much between the two teams, after 10 mins CYM crossed our line to score the first try which they were unable to convert then on the 20 min they got a penalty and went for the posts getting the 3 points, they managed to break through our defense again scoring a try and getting the conversion 15-0 to CYM, and then again just before the break to make it 20-0 going into the second half.

We may have been down but in the hearts of our players we certainly weren't out, with a few inspirational substitutions by the JVB coaching team the second half was all marys, taking the game to CYM marys fought back valiantly scoring a try in the 50th min and converting it and then again in the 70th min unfotunately missing the conversion, we kept fighting to the very end but with the minutes ticking away we were unable to get across their line again with the score ending 20-12 to CYM.

A special mention must go to Tony Flynn for his "efforts" on the wing he brought a lot of heat to the game!!!

On a muddy and cold Saturday St Mary’s J4B took on Unidare in St Mary's, this match was meant to be played in Unidare’s grounds but the ground was deemed unplayable so Mary's got the fixture moved to home. What started as a very intense and physical encounter Mary's start straight out of the blocks, hard hits and plenty of communication was key here today for St Mary’s. The first half was briefly held up with an injury to a Unidare player who received a small laceration below the eye, Mary's were chasing the game at this stage as Unidare had scored 3 tries. With 10 minutes from the end of the first half Mary's came back and managed to score two more tries. The second half start and after some harsh words from Adrian Malone Mary's came out even stronger and more determined to walk away with 4 pts today. Mary's forwards threw their bodies onthe line and constantly dominated the Unidare pack, Mary's backs then started to play simple ball to hand rugby and began to score tries with ease. Mary's fitness took charge then thanks to the work from Rachel Doolin and the Mary's players were just too quick and strong for the tired Unidare side. Final result was 46-22 to St Mary’s, next week is a home game against Malahide who narrowly beat Mary's in the away fixture.

Emerald Warriors

56 - 10

St. Marys J5 XV

Away

15 brave men took to the field for the J5’s first game of 2013. Many just back after the Christmas break. This game also featured the much anticipated seasonal re-appearance of J4B/J5 Manager Mossy.

The opening exchanges were very tight, with both teams exchanging penalty kicks early on. Walsh was successful with his effort from the boot for the Mary’s men. As the half wore on Emerald went over for a few scores to lead into the break.

Unfortunately Emerald Warriors had the better start to the second half and went over for a few more tries during the half. As the half wore on, the St Mary’s men battled back. They dominated the final stages of the game. Skipper Lloyd went over for a try which Walsh converted. Despite sustained pressure in their half late on that was to prove to be the only try St Mary’s would get.

The J5 League schedule takes a break this week. Next up in two weeks time will be a very tough derby match against the neighbours Terenure at home.

D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz

Home

The Annual D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz took place in Templeville Road on Friday evening last. Taking part as well as our J5’s, were our Vet’s, Terenure and a touring side from Buenos Aires. There were three grandsons of D.P. Smyth playing this year (Colin Smyth, Alan Godfrey and Andrew Godfrey).

Terenure and Buenos Aires made it to the final. Notably the Vet’s were the only team to beat the tourists on the nights, with a try from Colin Smyth and converted by Barry Shortle.

Buenos Aires beat Terenure to take the title.

Another great night rugby. Roll on next seasons event!!!
