A highly motivated and well organized Tallaght side proved too strong for Mossy’s Mob on Saturday afternoon at a Sunny Templeville. Tallaght brought a large crowd of supporters and a large pack which laid the foundations for the win.

Mary’s battled gamely and tried to play enterprising rugby in the good conditions. However the high risk strategy and some poor defending led to a string of soft tries in the first half and Mary’s went down to 14 just before half time when Red Ross was binned by an over zealous ref.

It was always going to be tough chasing the game in the second half, but Mary’s responded with commitment and passion. Led by Mossy, who is fresh from his pre-season training camp in Australia, Colm, Anto and the evergreen Alan Kibble, Mary’s persistence culminated in a fine try from Andrew Fitzpatrick.

The diligent ref however punished Mary’s loose discipline and the resultant pressure led to two kicks and another try.

The team can be proud of the character and resilience they showed in a far more competitive second half, and with the continued commitment and large turn out to training, this team will begin to punch above their weight in the J4 league.

A gutsy St.Mary's College J5s suffered defeat at the hands of an impressive Seapoint outfit under the floodlights of Cabinteely Park on Friday last. After a brusingly competitve opening to the game and a brace of penalties from the ever dependable Adrian Malone, a number of defensive lapses allowed Seapoint to run in enough tries to effectively secure the win by half time. With only pride left to play for, the boys in blue battled hard after the break and most of the second half was spent in the homeside's 22. Unlucky not to get over the Seapoint line and misfortunate enough to concede a couple of soft breakaway tries, the final score line gives an unfair reflection of the contest. Also, a worrying injury to the St.Mary's captain Maurice "The Destroyer" Davin which he sustained after administering a herculean hit on the opposition number 6 added to the team's woes. Stellar performance from Anto O' Hanlon and Mark Delany gave glimpses of the side's potential.

The going was heavy underfoot, with perfect weather conditions on Saturday afternoon for this clash against our old rivals.

Mary’s were hit by late withdrawals from Delo at scrum-half and prop Stephen Dromey as the Halloween revelry took its toll, as well as losing Ross who progressed to the J4s, during the week.

With B-Foot and Colm O’Keefe highly motivated against their former club the opening half was tight with Terence and Caolan probing the corners and Anto leading the line with a strong defensive effort.

Mary’s were kicking themselves when they conceded a soft try mid way through the first half when they were caught ball watching - Blackrock turning down the chance to kick a penalty to the corner instead launched a surprise cross field kick to their winger who touched down uncontested.

However Mary’s regrouped well from this sucker punch and their astute kicking was rewarded with a superb kick and chase from Walsh who fed to Terence before Ado converted.

Despite a long spell of strong defence up to half time, the Blackrock number 8 crashed over from a 5 metre scrum when Mossy got caught behind the ref (who was otherwise excellent) on the blindside and missed the tackle.

Turning around at 10-7 Mary’s dominated the second half for long periods in terms of both possession and territory and had several clear cut chances to cross the paint. However the best return came from the boot of Terence who levelled at 10 a piece.

With bodies dropping everywhere in the last quarter the road pitch resembled a scene from Platoon. Mossy, Terence, Simone, Colm, Ross, Al Kibble, and Ronan Foley all played to, and in some cases through, the pain barrier.

Following one of these long breaks in play, a lapse in concentration meant Mary’s were again sucker punched in a repeat of the soft first half try when ‘Rock again cleverly deployed the cross field kick to touchdown unopposed. The addition of the extra points meant Mary’s were under real pressure to score and strong ‘Rock defence in their 22 led to a turnover and breakout try at the end.

This was a vast improvement from the J5s, and credit to all the lads for getting up following Halloween, getting their subs paid in time, and especially the replacements who have been training patiently twice a week and got their chance on Saturday.

Mary’s can take confidence from this match where they were far more competitive and in reality should have won. Fair play to ‘Rock and the Ref too for a great game.

An injury plagued St.Mary's lost to a tough Millmount side during torrential rain at Templeville Road on Saturday afternoon. A few early errors left Saints under the cosh from the outset but resolute tackling saw the attackers repelled time and time again. The prison officers eventually unlocked the defence and their solitary unconverted try was all that separated the sides at the break. The start of the second half was greeted with a monsoon like downpour which made life very difficult for a Mary's side which already had to contend with facing into a gale force wind. The task at hand proved too much for the homeside and a second Millmount touchdown which was duly converted sealed the win for the visitors.

Saturday morning saw a well drilled Stillorgan side overcome a battling St. Mary's in a tough encounter in Templeville Road. Despite spending most of the first half in the opposition 22, the home side failed to get over for a five pointer and only had a solitary penalty to show for their domination at the break. A few lapses in concentration allowed the visitors to score a few soft tries which effectively sealed the result by midway through the second half. Bright performances from Gary Crawford and Adrian Malone are promising signs of a team improving with every game.

An assured performance from St.Mary's saw the lads claim their first victory of a difficult season, in a windswept Kiltipper on Saturday afternoon. Despite playing against a veritable hurricane in the first half, the Saints managed to hold a physical tallaght side to a mere ten points return for their climatic advantage. When the balletic David Cryan danced his way through the homeside's defence to touch down just before the break and Adrian Malone duly converted from an almost impossible angle, you could sense that the psychological advantage was very much with the visitors. The second half was played almost entirely in the the Tallaght twenty-two and the dominance of the Mary's pack was something to behold. They were eventually rewarded for their endeavours with a penalty from the impeccable Malone to tie up the game. Thereafter the game became a battle for victory. A series of sniping runs and battering line breaks breached the homeside's defensive wall as Ross Martin powered over for the decisive score. Malone added the supplimentary two and "Mossy's Mob" marched off the field victorious.

Without their leader who was on reconnaissance in Italy ahead of next weekend’s European clash with Milan, Mossy’s Mob overcame disrupted preparation and late cry offs to put in a spirited performance against a Stillorgan side who had beaten them comfortably at Templeville early in the season.

On the tight U13 pitch at Bird Avenue the pack took the game to Stillorgan from the outset, electing to play a high tempo offloading style. With the Canadian Ref letting anything go at the breakdown the game was a physical fight first and foremost with the Mary’s pack fronting up.

With utility back Andrew Fitzpatrick pressed into service at scrum half and regular opensides B-foot and Red Ross asked to slot into Centre and Wing respectively, the team lacked the cohesion and familiarity to capitalize on the territory and possession earned in the loose.

Having scored a soft try early on against the run of play, Stillorgan took their opportunities by kicking penalties on rare visits to the Mary’s 22 to stretch to a 13-0 lead.

In fairness to Stillorgan the game winning try came from a period of sustained pressure midway through the second half and their kicker was again on target.

Mary’s piled on the pressure in the closing quarter where some desperate defence saw Stillorgan reduced to 14, and then 13 in the last ten minutes. Eventually Mary’s pressure paid off when Shane Levins crossed for a try, but without a recognized goal kicker, they failed to add the extras.

A mix up saw St. Mary’s kicking off later then planned against their Italian visitors last Friday night.

That the players were keen to get going was clear as both sides opened at a frantic pace, which the referee likened to a much higher standard afterwards. The Italians we characteristically physical, particularly up front, and they barged their way over for a couple of tries midday through the second half. Mary’s bounced back with a breakout try through Kieran Morrissey.

Milano took a well worked try in the shadow of the trees in the corner just before half time.

In the second half Mary’s made full use of the agreement to use rolling subs, and after failing to convert a couple of great chances eventually crossed the whitewash through Kieran again, following a Milano score early in the second half.

The real story of the night were the post match celebrations, led by captain for the day Simone, who at the time of writing, has not surfaced.

St. Mary’s bowed out of the cup, and ended their competitive season with defeat to Clontarf.

Despite dominating for long periods with both possession and territory Mary’s failed to turn the pressure into points and ultimately this led to their downfall.

A breakout try and a penalty from Clontarf left Mary’s chasing two scores in the last quarter of the match .

Afterwards the players adjourned to the bar to toast and thank captain Mossy who worked so hard during the year.

He has organized a couple of wind down matches against Barnhall and the upcoming blitz.

The J5s had a chance to run the unlucky cup defeat to ‘Tarf out of the system, by taking on Barnhall in a friendly under lights. We managed to rustle together a side before kick off with thanks to a few guest players. Griso lined out for the first half with Donners and former J3 Captain Dave Lyons playing the full game.

The game started off at a fast pace as most friendlies tend to do. The first 15 mins was pretty close but we finally managed to cross the line. That started off a good spell up to half time with us going over for a few more. The kicking duties were spread around with even me scoring a kick.

In the second half we let them in for an early. It was only a blip as normal serve soon resumed and we scored a good few more tries. A nice way to prepare for the J5 Blitz at home on Saturday with one of our few wins of the season. Many thanks to the guest players on the night. Eamo Moran from the J4s had a good performance as the ref on the night.

The D.P. Smyth J5 blitz will be kicking off at 12 in the club on Saturday. This will the last action for the season for the J5s.
