J5’s 7-41 Terenure

Last Saturday saw the J5’s playing their first pre season game of the season against Terenure.

The J5’s started strong with a good defensive display. It was a tight game with Terenure going over for the 1st try of the game on 25 mins. A clearly dubious try with the winger putting his foot in touch as he was crossing the line. The referee let the try stand. The remainder of the half was very tight with Terenure going over for another try.

In the 2nd half we were still in early on by going over for a try. A great display for 50 mins. From then the game changed. We made changes to give everyone a run. Terenure got a few more tries in the last half an hour to seal the game. Unfortunately in the last min our club PRO Keith took a bad knock to his collar bone. We hope he wont be out for too long.

Overall this was good friendly game to start the season off. Next up is an away friendly against Stillorgan next Saturday.

J5’s 25-19 Stillorgan

An enthralling encounter at Bird Avenue saw a new-look J5 team edge past a valiant Stillorgan side 25-19. Stillorgan began the match backed by a gale force wind which helped an impressive kicker dispatch an early penalty. However, despite mounting pressure on the Mary's line, the boys in blue managed to withstand the home side's attacks and eventually scored a brace of impressive tries on either wing to steam into a ten point to three lead. Aided by the strong breeze, Stillorgan ended the firt half well, scoring a further penalty and a converted try to take a three point lead into the break.

Mary's started the second half a little nervously and conceded a further two penalties to trail by nine points. But soon the tide began to turn and the visitors were rewarded for their patience, as Andy Fitzpatrick capitalised on a Stillorgan error to score a fine breakaway try. Two further five-pointers from Dave Browne and Dan McEvoy sealed an impressive win for a hard working team whose self-belief got them over the line in the end. A try count of five to one on the day stands out as an impressive statistic, demonstrating both the side's attacking guile and resilient defence.

J5’s 42-00 Tallaght

St. Mary's J5's romped home to an easy away victory against a tough Tallaght side on Saturday morning, scoring an impressive eight tries in the process. The visiting team asserted their dominance on the game from early on and spent the vast majority of the first half camped in the home side’s twenty-two, eventually taking a 17-0 lead into the break. In reality, the score line flattered Tallaght as St. Mary's were so dominant that they should have amounted a far greater tally.

In the second half, the visitors settled into their natural running game and some scintillating back-play led to a further five tries with no reply from Tallaght. A total of five different backs went over the line during the game, including a brace from centre Mick Daly who was unlucky not to have bagged a hat trick. Hopefully, the team's good form in pre- season augurs well for the league which kicks off next Saturday, away to Clondalkin.

The J5s got their league campaign off to a winning start on Saturday with an impressive away win againnst Clondalkin. St. Mary's got off to a flying start, scoring two tries in quick succession to steam into a twelve point lead, mid-way through the second half. But the early gains were cancelled out when the homeside managed to battle back, to bring teams level heading into the break. But, with a strong breeze behind them in the second half, the Saints managed to take full control of the match and tries from Mark Byrne, Shane Deegan and Shane Levins sealed a well-deserved victories for the away team. The win comes on the back of two pre-season friendly victories, so it's a fantastic start to the season for the lads.

J5 XV 50-10 Wanderers

On Saturday the J5's took on Wanderers at home. Wanderers only arrived down with 13 players so we had to go with 13 against 13.

Despite this the lads managed to keep themselves focus and get an early try on the board through full back Dan McEvoy. That set up the pattern of how this game would continue. In all we went over for 8 tries on the day. The game was a bit scrappy at times but the result is what mattered.

This result see the J5's go top of the league for the first time. Next up in the league is a tough away trip on Friday week to Lakelands to play the neighbours.

Last Saturday the J5's played a friendly against Kilkenny Normans RFC who travelled up from Thomastown, Co Kilkenny for the game.

Despite what the scoreline might suggest, it was a tight game. Both sides tried not to let the rain effect them. The score at half time was 25-5 in our favour.

In the second half our better fitness showed despite not having any subs. Midway through the half they seemed to tire and it was during this spell that we got most of our scores. In the end it finished 42-8.

Next up on Saturday morning is a tough league game against Terenure.

Meanwhile on Friday night the J5 B's will be playing a friendly against a touring side from Toulouse at home.

St Mary's J5 B's 20-10 UMeur, Toulouse

November is a time for teams from sunnier climes to visit Ireland, roll around in mudbaths and enjoy some "hospitality" after the match. Usually they are here to play in Lansdowne Road but not always. On Friday night, it was the J5 (killer) B's who played host to the French touring team, UMeuR.

Last Easter, the J5's toured in Toulouse and it was with great pleasure that we welcomed our good friends from Toulouse over to Dublin. The French team included a former Marys player in their ranks but they are all honorary Marys men now. The Marys team was comprised of J5 players with a healthy helping of U-21 players providing some fitness to balance out the "experience" of some of the J5 players. Two halves of 35 minutes were played with personnel from each side reffing a half each.

The game didn't start well for Marys as the French lads showed typical French flair in racing over for a try from outside our 22. However, Marys hit back with some impressive ball carrying and furious rucking, which brought them right back into contention. A well worked move saw Dave Millard supply the scoring pass to Matt Boland who dived over for the score despite the attentions of two defenders. Ian McCarthy's direct ball carrying was especially effective on what was not an ideal night for adventurous rugby. A period of sustained French pressure was relieved when Shane Levins intercepted a pass and ran the length of the field to put us in the lead. The lead was doubled when Colin Burkley gathered up an overthrown lineout near the line. The ball was offloaded in the tackle (some unkind souls say popped loose) into the arms of Dave Millard who raced for the line to score the try.

The second half saw the Marys team tiring and faced prolonged pressure from the efficient lineout/maul tactics of the strong French pack. Last ditch & desperate defense kept them to one score but it was clear that kicking for territory was only giving the ball back to a very strong pack, well capable of mauling it back into the Marys 22. A change of tactics was needed and our U-21 players' fitness & pace came to the fore when our continuous rucking saw a breakthrough move making it all the way to the line. An eager David Sheedy unfortunately knocked the ball on with the line at his mercy. Earlier, Sheedy got the biggest cheer of the night when he decided to introduce the French pack to counter-rucking, Munster-style and bowled over two props with his eagerness to claim the ball. Shortly after, the ref blew the final whistle and both teams retired to the bar to enjoy some well-earned pints.

Many thanks to the players from U-21 and J4 who helped out with numbers on the night and also to Mossy Davin and Jim Nolan for helping out off the field.

J5’s 28-16 Terenure

On Saturday the J5’s took to the field for their biggest game so far this season against our neighbours Terenure. There was huge competition for places in the squad for this game. It was evidenced by our biggest turn out so far at training on Wednesday when 26 players turned up to fight for their place in the match day 20.

The team was very determined and focused for this game. Eager to keep up the winning streak, but also to put to bed the ghost of last season when we were on the end of two heavy defeats to Terenure.

We started off the strongest and brightest of the two sides. Great play from scrum half Kieran Morrissey saw him take advantage of a gap in the Terenure defence, slip through a couple of tackles to score in the corner. 5-0 Mary’s. The next 15 minutes of the game were tight, but we still dominated. Our pack killed Terenure in numerous early scrums which led to them taking off a prop and therefore making the scrums uncontested. Good play again brought us into the Terenure 22. However Terenure got lucky and incepted a miss placed pass to run the length of the field and go over under the posts. The conversion was successful. 5-7 Terenure. The lads were not phased by this and continued to battle hard. With 10 minutes left in the half we put Terenure under pressure inside their 22 and won a penalty. The kick was scored by David Crowley. 8-7 Mary’s. The first half scoring was not finished yet. Scrum half Morrissey again made a break and ran through the Ternure defence to go over for his 2nd try of the game. Crowley got the conversion. 15-7 to Mary’s. Its stayed that way at half time.

The aim at half time was to keep focused and continue to put Terenure under pressure. Early in the 2nd half that didn’t seem what was going to happen when Terenure got a penalty and scored the 3 points. 15-10 Mary’s. Again the lads weren’t phased and yet again took the battle to Terenure. Straight from the kick off the ball was turned over. Backs and forwards combined together and worked the ball down beside the touchline and into the Terenure 22. The move finished off with prop Steve Walkin going over for the try. 20-10 Mary’s. For the next 20 minutes the team continued to work hard together and force Terenure into some mistakes. One suck mistake led to a penalty opportunity with Crowley getting another 3 points. 23-10 Mary’s. The last 10 minutes were very nervous to watch. Terenure continuously tried to force themselves back into the game. Defence held strong but were unlucky to give away two penalties which Terenure converted. 23-16 Mary’s. Terenure tried to keep working the ball into our half. A wild pass was thrown which was intercepted by Gary Crawford who ran all the way to the line to score the try. A huge roar of relief when out from our side of the pitch as we knew we had finally got our victory over Terenure which we have been waiting way to long for. Final score 28-16 Mary’s.

The lads were delighted at the final whistle. Great performance from the team as a whole including the subs when they came into the game. That is 9 wins in a row for the team (4 friendlies and 5 league games) which see us remain at the top of the table. Still a long way to go in the league with another 13 games to go.

J5 XV 15-13 DLSP

On a very cold and icy Friday night in Templeville Road, the J5's tough on DLSP in the league. This was a stronger side than they had out against us a month ago in a friendly. We knew it was going to be a tough game and there wouldnt be much in.

As expected the game started very tight. Not much in it between the two side. The first score of the game came fifteen minutes in when DLSP kicked a penalty inside our twenty two. 0-3. We came back very strong and turned the ball over from the restarted. Within a few seconds Gary Crawford went through the DLSP line and score under the posts. Kick from Adrian Malone was successful. 7-3. Thats the way it stayed for the half until the last ten minutes. DLSP landed another penalty. 7-6. Again within a few minutes we responded with a fine try from scrum half Kieran Morriessy near half time. 12-6.

We spent most of the second half camped inside our twenty two. DLSP put a lot of pressure which the lads did their best to contain. We held them until eighteen minutes to go when they got through our line. Kick was successful. 12-13. The lads kept the heads up and battled on. The remainder of the half was spent inside the DSLP. With 5 mins to go the pressure paid off and we were rewarded a penalty within striking distance. Gary Crawford landed the kick to give us back the lead. Only just. 15-13. DLSP tried to get themselves back into but our defence held for. A few minutes later a shivering ref blew for full time.

Peformance on the night mightnt have been the best but we got the result which is all that matters. The lads have learned a lot from experiences of previous seasons where they wouldnt have had the confidence to fight to get the win. Next up is an away trip to Malahide which no doubt will be just as tough.

J5 XV 14-05 Clondalkin

On Saturday morning the J5's got the second half of the season underway, hoping to start 2011 the same way the end 2010, with a win. In wet and very windy conditions at home we took on Clondalkin.

The 1st half was pretty tight. Rustiness showed, but we started getting into our stride. Midway through the half we were reward for some good play with 2nd row Eamonn Walsh going over. David Crowley landed the conversion. 7-0. Thats the way is stayed at half time.

The 2nd half was a close affair again. Again midway through the half we managed to break through with scrum half Kieran Morrissey scoring. Crowley again added the 2 points. 14-0. Clondalkin tried to get themselves back into the game. A few defensive mistakes inside our 22 led to Clondalkin going over. Conversion was missed. 14-05. In the last 10 mins we made up for conceding the try with some good attacking displays but were unable to get any further scores. Game finished 14-05.

After such a long break (last game was in November) since our last game it was great to get back to winning ways. Next up is an away game against Malahide.

J5 XV 34-17 Malahide

On a very cold afternoon, the J5's travelled out beside the sea to take on Malahide on Saturday.

Malahide started off the stronger side. A few missed first time tackles enabled Malahide to make a few breaks. They were rewarded with a try. 5-0. After 15 minutes we got ourselves back into the game and made amends for the slow start. The first time we got into their 22 we came away with a try through scrum half Kieran Morrissey. 5-5. From there we continued to dominate the game. A break down the left flank and a kick on led to a chase between winger Caolan Reid and his opposite number with Reid getting his hands to the ball to make the touch down on the line. 10-5. At this stage we had to make an enforced changed due to an injury to David Browne, which unfortunately meant we had to go to uncontested scrums. Replacement Paul Travers wasnt on the pitch very long before he went over for a score. Gary Crawford got the conversion. 17-5. Prior to the try, in the build up outhalf David Crowley had to come off with a dislocation. With a few minutes left in the have we had a lineout just inside their 22. After a clean catch the pack mauled it over the line with Hooker Jody Brooks getting on the end of it. 22-5. Half time.

Just like the first half, we were slow out of the blocks in the second half. Again some first time tackles were missed and Malahide went over for the first score of the second half. 22-12. It didnt take us long to up our game. We got straight back into it. We got ourselves up into the Malahide and Eamonn Walsh went over for his second try in two matches. 27-12. Midway through the half Kieran Morrissey also got his second try of the game, with Gary Crawford successful with the kick. 34-12. Late on in the half Malahide went over for a score. 34-17. That is the way it finished.

The unbeaten run continues for the J5's. Eight out of eight with another ten games left to play in the league. Next up is an away trip to Clontarf.

Clontarf RFC VS St Mary's College RFC

Castle Avenue, Clontarf 2:30pm Kick off

The League leaders but their unbeaten record on the line at a cold Clontarf. St Mary's where missing a couple of regulars due to injury and unavailability but still fielded a very strong team. St Mary's started the game very slow and were under sustained pressure from a big Clontarf pack from the start. Clontarf enjoyed a lot off time in the St Mary's 22 and should have got an early try only for some good defence from St Mary's. This pressure continued and the St Mary's defence finally gave way and Clontarf went over for the opening try in the 8 minute. The attempted conversion just drifted wide to St Mary’s relief. St Mary's had a good re-start through Garry Crawford and a good chase from the pack resulting in a penalty for Mary's which Crawford converted to leave the score Clontarf 5 St Mary's 3. Soon after the restart Mary's lost their elder statesman and inspirational leader Ian McCarthy due to injury and this seemed to hit Mary's hard. The next 15 minutes where full off mistakes and St Mary's were guilty of giving away a lot of penaltys but lucky for them none of them in kicking range for Clontarf. Clontarf again enjoyed some pressure in the Mary's 22 and on the 28 minute after sustained pressure they went over for their second try on the 28 minute which was converted. After this Mary's seemed to up their performance and enjoyed some time with the ball in hand and good pressure in Clontarf's half but due various mistakes where unable to convert this pressure into any points. At the short whistle Clontarf went in the happier leading 12-3. St Mary's made changes at half time with David Sheedy coming on, on the wing and Danny McEvoy moving to second centre. This change nearly paid off straight away with Garry Crawford playing a beautiful cross field kick that Sheedy ran onto and put McEvoy in the clear but was un-lucky to knock on. This was the best Mary's could manufacture and Clontarf where on the front foot for the next 20 minutes but failed to convert any of this pressure into points. This sustained pressure took its toll on Mary's with Mary's players being forced off due to injury and this really stretched Mary’s resources. St Mary's continued to infringe at ruck time and where being penalised on a regular basis and one of these penalties resulted in a further 3 points for Clontarf to give them a 15-3 lead on the 70 minute. Mary's again reshuffled their team and resulted in some good attacking play form their now second centre Kieran Morrissey and resulted in Mary's enjoying some game time in the Clontarf 22. This pressure looked to have paid off when Jody Brooks had gone over the white wash but was judged to have made a double movement by the referee. This seemed to set Mary's into life and had sustained pressure but with Mary's now trying to force the issue they where caught with an interception pass and Clontarf looked to get a break away try only for a great try saving tackle by Mick Daly. This turned out to be the last play of the game and Clontarf ran out winners on a score line of Clontarf 15 St Mary's College 3. Mary's now have to bounce back from their first loss of the season with a top of the table clash with Tallaght at a sure to be packed Templeville Road.

St Mary's College J5 B XV 20-15 Terenure

On a cold and windy night the J5 B XV took on local rivals in a friendly in Templeville Road.

The format of the game was 3 halves of twenty minutes with no conversions.

The conditions dictated the way the game was played. In the first half Terenure took advantage of a spilled pass and went over for the first try of the game. Straight from the re-start Marys managed to turn over the ball. After some great play 2nd row Darragh Coffey went over for the score. 5-5. Thats the way it stayed for the half.

In the 2nd half we were playing into the wind. A lot of the play was in our half. Mid way through the half full back Steve Daly made a break and got a score. Not long after Terenure got through our line to level the scores. 10-10.

For the final half we again had the wind in our favour and tried to use it to advantage. Terenure had to keep running the ball. The got through our lines to take the lead. Not long after scrum half Dave Daly levelled the scrum. Good pressure late on yield another try for the scrum half to win the game 20-15.

Many thanks to U21 players Jack Ebbs, Dave Daly, Steve Daly and Radu Verdes for playing tonight. Also thanks to Richard Pyne from the J4's.

St Marys College RFC VS Tallaght RFC

Templeville Road, Kickoff 11am

There was a top of the table clash on offer at a rain swept Templeville Road on Saturday morning. The League leaders St Marys took on the second placed team Tallaght. St Marys were coming into this game off the back of their first loss of the season away to Clontarf last week and Tallaght where in a buoyant mood after edging out Clondalkin last weekend. Tallaght got off to a good start and seemed to handle the tough under foot conditions with Marys struggling to get a handle on the game. Tallaght enjoyed some time in the Marys half and would have been in for an early try only for some good defence by St Marys. St Marys slowly got into the game and enjoyed some good possession and started building some phases. This pressure finally paid off with St Marys getting a rolling maul going from just inside the Tallaght 22 and carried this all the way over the line with the big running number 8 Paul Travers being credited for the try. Gary Crawford added on the 2 points from a difficult angle. St Mary’s confidence was now sky high and they soon went over the white wash again. After putting together a number of good phases and good going forward ball the impressive David Browne broke from the back of the ruck to go over for the try leaving Gary Crawford the easy task of adding on 2 points. After this the game became more open and Tallaght started to get on top of St Marys but due to mistakes plus good defensive where not able to convert this pressure in to scores and St Marys went in at half time with a 14 point lead. The conditions started to get worse in the second half and a wind started to blow in the favour of Tallaght, with this wind behind them Tallaght got on top of Marys at the break down. With Tallaght now camped in St Marys 22 the pressure finally paid off with Tallaght going over for a try which they failed to convert leaving the score St Marys 14 Tallaght 5. Tallaght now were in the ascendancy and had Marys under big pressure. This consistent pressure took its toll on Marys with there inspirational number 8 Paul Travers and their reliable full back Danny McEvoy having to go off due to injury. St Marys seemed to rally back with the loss of these players and started to take the game to Tallaght once again and should have converted this pressure into points only for some handling errors. With 10 minutes to go Paul Travers resumed his position at number 8 and this seemed to sure up the Marys pack. Tallaght had the better of the last few minutes but Marys defence stood tall to deny Tallaght a losing bonus point. St Marys finally ran out winner on a score line of St Marys 14 Tallaght 5. St Marys consolidated their possession at the top of the table. St Marys now welcome the visit of Bectitive Rangers next Saturday to Templeville Road.

St Mary’s RFC J5’s 29-3 Bective Rangers

On Saturday St Mary’s welcomed Bective Rangers to Templeville Road for a game that had the makings of a potential banana skin given Mary’s impressive win over second placed Tallaght the week previous and the perceived weakness of the opposition. Although the conditions underfoot were not exactly conducive to expansive running rugby, Mary’s put the visitors under pressure from the off with a balance of strong forward play and some creative back moves.

This initial pressure was rewarded with an early try for the home side, with scrum-half Kieran Morrissey taking advantage of a gap in the Bective defence to finish an excellent team move with a score under the posts. The conversion was successful marking it 7-0 Mary’s.

The early score seemed to spark Bective into life; they claimed the ball from the restart and drove into Mary’s territory applying the first real test to the Mary’s defence. This mini revival turned into points when Mary’s conceded a soft penalty for not rolling away affording the Bective standout an easy kick to cut the lead to 7-3.

This would be the visitor’s only score of the game; Mary’s reasserted their control immediately and would have lengthened their lead quicker if not for some poor finishing. The pressure was getting to Bective and midway through the first half their number 13 was yellow carded for becoming a bit too friendly with Traver’s scrum cap. Mary’s made quick use of their numerical advantage, pinning Bective back into their own 22. Winning a lineout on the right sideline, Mary’s bulldozed their way to line with an overpowering rolling maul that resulted in a try for lock Darragh Coffey. Fitz’s conversion kick sailed closer to the corner flag than the uprights leaving the score at 12-3.

There was one change at the half with Michael Daly being introduced for David Sheedy at first centre. Unlike the first encounter between the two teams at Donnybrook where Mary’s let a 22point halftime lead be cut to a single point by the end of play, Mary’s stayed focused and ever let the opposition back into the game.

The first really incisive attacking back play of the day stretched the Bective defence from sideline to sideline with the move culminating in a try for centre Shane Hourigan in the right hand corner.

The introduction of fresh legs midway through the second half ensured Mary’s maintained their tempo with Daniel Hegarty, Caolan Smith and Ian Smith replacing Darragh Coffey, Lorcan Byrne and Marco Pietri respectively.

An excellently taken incept try by Andy Fitzpatrick and resultant conversion put the game beyond any doubt at 24-3. The scoring was then complete with industrious scrum half Kieran Morrissey grabbing his second try of the match.

Overall an excellent performance by Mary’s, next up is tricky away game at Wanderers next Saturday.

After a solid week of pouring rain, it was a relief to see the sun again on Saturday morning. I'm sure our French visitors, CRAB were wondering if their flight had landed in the wrong city but once the saw the damage the rain had wrought on our grounds, they knew they were in the right country after all. Luckily John Carvill and Frank Doyle had been working on the pitch since an early hour to ensure that it was playable. Many thanks to both of them for their efforts.

As Marys J5's had a rescheduled league game, player numbers were limited for the killer B's and we were grateful to Hugh Hogan for providing us with a number of players to fulfill the fixture. We started playing 12 a side with 6 forwards and 6 backs each. It wasn't long before CRAB showed us that they possessed the usual French flair and ran in two quick tries. Marys were able to hit back with some storming runs from Stu Morrin and Adam Nolan. Good offloading saw Darragh Devlin dive over to open Marys' account. It was to be the first of three tries for the free-running forward, who also had a good day as the sole lineout jumper.

With the heavy underfoot conditions, playing running rugby was something of a lottery but the skill level shown by both teams was extremely good considering the kilos of muck sticking to our boots. CRAB were quite strong in the pack so Marys had to adopt a rucking game to ensure that the ball wasn't lost in static mauls.

Niall Dilworth picked up an injury early on which ended his involvement and CRAB kindly loaned us one of their 12 subs who turned out to be a most excellent player for us!

Throughout the rest of the game, Marys & CRAB traded tries with Cormac Treacy grabbing two, one of which was a cheeky intercept and Conor O'Bierne scoring after an excellent line break.

Things were poised evenly at 6 tries apiece only minutes from the end but CRAB took full advantage of tiring Marys legs to fling the ball around with abandon and run over two quality tries which ended the game. Many thanks to Alan for reffing a fun encounter.

After this, we stayed around to support the J5's as they scored a convincing victory over Bective and CRAB put their "ALLEZ LES BLEUS" chants to good use. CRAB then enjoyed a thrilling and high-skill encounter between Marys & Dolphin in the AIL.

Terenure RFC VS St Marys College RFC

Lakelands, Terenure 3pm Kick off

There was a top of the table clash on offer at Lakelands on Saturday with the League leaders St Marys and there main rivals in chief Terenure doing battle at a packed and hostile Lakelands. St Marys got off to a good start with Terenure’s full back knocking on from the kick off, Marys pack pilled in and forced Terenure to give away a kick able penalty. Marys out half David Crowley failed to convert this easy penalty which would turn out to be costly at the end of the game. After this miss it spurred Terenure into life and they where soon pilling the pressure onto Marys defence that was starting to show cracks. Terenure pressure finally paid off with their impressive winger going over under the post for the opening score. To St Mary’s relief Terenure failed to convert this into 7 points. St Marys again pilled on the pressure from the re- start and forced a turn over allowing them to have some valuable time in Terenure’s half but where unable to convert this pressure into points. Terenure really started to take a strangle hold on the game and St Marys were under huge pressure with the Terenure pack starting to dominate and St Marys missing crucial tackles. This pressure finally paid off with Terenure going over for there second try and this time the out half converted to leave the score Terenure 12 St Marys 0. St Marys where now under pressure with Terenure threatening to put the game out of sight but to St Mary’s credit they showed great resolve resulting in Crowley converting an easy penalty. St Marys where now starting to play well but it was short lived with Terenure finishing the half stronger and adding another 3 points to leave the score Terenure 15 St Marys 3 at the short whistle. St Marys suffered a double blow at the start of the second half with Terenure extending their lead to 15 points and St Marys loosing there big ball carrier Paul Travers through a rib injury. This loss seemed to sting Marys into life and from a good line out Marys Veteran Ian McCarthy went over in the corner for Marys first try the grounding of the ball was in dispute but to Marys and Ian’s delight the try was awarded. Marys out half David Crowley then converted from the touch line. Marys now really had the bit between their teeth and started pilling pressure on Terenure which resulted in Terenure giving away a penalty in Crowley’s kicking range. Crowley duly slotted the penalty to leave just 5 points between the teams. Terenure’s back where now firmly to the wall but they never panicked and finished the games better and ended up scoring a try in the corner with 15 minutes to go. Marys now where throwing everything at Terenure but could not breach the Terenure defence. Terenure then landed the final blow with a penalty with 5 minutes to go to leave Marys outside losing bonus point range. Marys threw caution to the wind and moved there scrum half Kieran Morrissey to centre in an effort to create something but what ever Marys had to offer Terenure had all the answers in defence and duly ran out deserve winners on a score line of Terenure 23 St Marys 13. This now leaves St Marys just 4 point clear of Terenure at the top of the Junior 5 table.

De La Salle Palmerston RFC VS St Mary's College RFC

Kirwan Park, Palmerston 7.30pm Kick off

Table toppers St Mary's made the short trip down the M50 on Friday night to take on De La Salle at a pristine Kirwan Park. St Mary's hit the ground running and had the better of the opening exchanges with their pack grapping a strangle hold on the game. Mary's opened the scoring when their impressive flanker Jody Brooks crossed the white wash. This try came about from good Mary's attacking play that resulted in a penalty on De La Salle 5 meter line and with Captain Anthony O’Hanlon declining the 3 points on offer Mary's looked to there outstanding second row partnership of Ian McCarthy and Eamonn Walsh to take the ball on and with De La Salle defence scrambling Brooks spotted the gap and went over the white wash to give Mary's an early lead. Mary’s kicker Daithí Crowley again had a slow start to his kicking and failed to add the 2 points.

The game started to open up for the next 10 minutes and it was littered with mistakes and penalties. Mary's where the main offenders in chief in the penalty count and where starting the rack up the penalties as the ref were struggling to get a grip on the game. To Mary's good fortune De La Salle kicker was having an off night and was not able to convert 2 kickable penalties. This bit of good fortune spurred Mary's into life and where soon 10 nil in front after their captain went under the post for Mary’s second try. The try was in conjunction with the game and came from a good break by James Hynes that resulted in the off load to Anthony O'Hanlon to leave him with the easy task of touching down under the posts. Crowley duly added the 2 points to leave the score at Mary's 12 De La Salle 0. This was to be the last score of the first half, with Mary's going in at half time the happier team.

Mary's had to start the second half without their inspirational elder states man Ian McCarthy who had to retire due to a shoulder injury which is suspected to be arthritis. De La Salle upped their game in the second half and enjoyed most of the ball at the start of the second half and had Mary's defence under huge pressure. To Mary’s credit their defence stood tall and to be honest De La Salle never looked like breaking down this well organised defence.

Mary's again had another set back with them losing their centre and kicker Daithí Crowley to injury but were lucky to be able to call on the ever enthusiastic Dave Sheedy to come in. Mary's where now threatening to kill off the game and where camped in the De La Salle 22 and were starting to up the phase count and put De La Salle defensive to the test. De La Salle finally gave way and Kieran Morrissey went under the posts giving Gary Crawford the easy task of converting the try which he duly obliged with. Morrissey had to leave the field straight away through injury, which resulted in the impressive Caolan Smith coming on at number 13 and the ever versatile Gary Crawford moving to scrum half.

The game now was starting to peak out and David Millard put the result out of De La Salle reach when he went over in the corner with 5 minutes to go. This was the last score of the game and Mary's ran out winner on a score line of St Mary's 23 De La Salle 0. St Mary's stay top of the J5 table with a 4 point cushion over close rivals Terenure.

J5 XV 13-7 Malahide

A defensive display of Herculean proportions saw the J5s continue on their path towards the league title against a tough Malahide side, on Templeville Road last Saturday. Much of the first half was spent in the Mary's twenty two, as the visitors strove to upset the league leaders' title hopes, but wave after wave of attack was repelled and against the run of play, Mary's managed to pick off a penalty from the boot of Daithi Crowley, on one of their few forays into the opposition half. Malahide failed to register a score in the first half and must have felt thensleves unlucky to be three points down at the break.

The visitors once again started strongly when the game resumed and went over early on in the second half for the game's firts five pointer, which was duly converted. From that point on however, the tide began to turn in the home side's favour, as Mary's began to impose their superior skill level on the game. Their steady pressure was rewarded with a further penalty, this time from the boot of Gary Crawford, which seemed to signal the beginning of a change in the momentum of the game. An onslaught of attacking rugby was eventually rewarded as an explosive burst from centre, Kieran Morrissey resulted in a try underneath the posts, with the supplimentary two added by Gary Crawford, to establish a six point lead. This was to prove enough for Mary's, who despite having to resist a late flurry from Malahide, sealed a victory that sees them well poised to secure the league title, needing only one win from their remaining two games.

The J5's took the pitch on Saturday knowing a win would secure the league title for Mary's however the team was slow to start and against the run of play Shane Hourigan scored a try from a suspiciously offside position. Crawford tagged on the conversion and a further two penalties during the first half giving Mary the lead going into the break.

Stillorgan were still in touch but after the break Mary.s began to exert some pressure leading to a penalty in the opening minutes. Through indiscipline however Marys were continually getting pinged around the ruck and it was Kieran Morrissey who was given a yellow card after bravely putting his body on the line to help distressed team-mate Jody Brooks aka "people". With Stillorgan still within striking distance of a notable win it came down to some great play by Caolan Smith who then offloaded superbly to Dave Sheedy who finished well in the corner. Suspicions of double-movement were murmered amongst the spectators however following a brief discussion with the tmo the try was given.

Following his ten-minute cooling of period Kieran Morrissey came back onto the pitch fueled by anger and rage which had been building up over the preceding ten minute period. Bursting through the Stillorgan defence he point blankly refused to pass to supporting players as he has been known to do over the course of the league and finished under the posts with a poor Chris Ashton imitation swan dive while his fellow players looked away in disgust....especially Browner who for some reason was even more disgusted than the rest of us.

So it finished 25-9, Marys have one more game at home on Thursday night against a tough Tallaght outfit. The knowledge of a final home game at night time with the opportunity to finish on a high should hopefully see a performance fit to end a championship winning season.

J5's 27-10 Tallaght

Last Thursday the J5's play Tallaght at home in the final J5 League game of the Season. This was originally an away fixture, but Tallaght conceded home advantage so we could collect the League Trophy at home.

Tallaght started the stronger side. It took a while for us to get going. (Minds on what was due to happen after the game) Tallaght were reward with an early try which they converted. 0-7. Midway through the half we worked our way back into the game. Centre Kieran Morrisset went over in the corner. 5-7. From the kick off the ball was knocked on and it was a scrum to Tallaght. Following some good defensive work the ball was intercepted by Captain Anto. He fell just short of the line and offloaded to chasing prop Steve Walkin who finished off the score. Gary Crawford converted the kick. 12-7. Thats the way it stayed at half time.

Crawford kept the score ticking over in the 2nd half with an early penalty kick. 15-7. Some wild handling by Tallaght led to Kieran Morrissey coming away with the ball from inside our 22. He ran nearly the length of the field before he offloaded to Andy Fitzpatrick who finished off the score. Crawford again got the kick. 22-7. Later in the half Caolan Reid went over for what turned out to be our final score of the game. 27-7. A lot of the remainder of the half was spend defending our line. Persistant penalties by Jody Brooks led to him being put in the bin. During this spell Tallaght only managed a kick at goal. 27-10. Final score.

There was great celebration at the final whistle. We knew it was a job well done. After a long season of 16 League games, with only 2 defeats, we finished our campaign off with a win. J5 League Champions 2010-2011.

It has taken what seems like a very long time to get to this moment. Over 5 or 6 years of hard work. We have had a few ups and a lot more downs (heavy defeats) on the way. On a personal note, for me, this is my best moment involved in the J5's. Our first trophy with this group of players. We have 3 weeks to wait for our next match. A cup semi final. This season isn't over yet for us.

Last Thursday night, the J5 B team played a semi final game in the J6's Cup. This Cup Competition is meant for teams that do not take part in a league. Blackrock brought a very strong side made up of players from their J4's and U21 Pennant (who were all within the 6 match rule). Our side was many made up of players who mostly couldn't make it onto our J5 League side.

The half time score was 43-0. Due to the one sidedness of this game we made a lot of changes throughout the second half, which made us more competitive.

This helped make it a bit more of a game. Despite being up by a lot of points, it didn’t stop a couple of Blackrock players from losing their temper. In the first incident a punch was thrown and resulted in nothing more that a short word from the ref.

Persistence by Kieran Morrissey forced his way over the Blackrock line to score our only try. Crowley converted the kick. Final score was 62-7.

We wish Blackrock all the best in the final.

J5 XV 3-22 Terenure

On Friday the J5 XV took on Terenure in the Semi Final of the O'Connor Cup down in Lakeland. We didnt have the best of preparations for this game. A number of players were missing due to injury and holidays. The tough and long league succes had taken its toil on a number. Despite this we got a strong side together for this Derby Game.

Terenure started the better. Going over for an early score. 0-5. From the re-started we refocused ourselves and tried to play ourselves back into the game. We had some could breaks from the backs, notably from centre Morrissey. We were getting momentum up and playing strong. Terenure had a man in the bin for a trip at a ruck. As the game got midway through the half, we continued to make the breaks. Outhalf Crawford tried to break through the Terenure defence inside their 22. When he hit the ground his shoulder disclocated. The game was delayed for 10 minutes as a result. Thankfully it wasnt too long before his shoulder when back into place. We had to resuffle our back line after the injury. When the game started again we were slow to get back into it. Terenure when over for another try before the break. We got a penalty just before half time. 3-12 at the break.

Terenure started the 2nd half the stronger and wen in for an early try. 3-19. Straight after the try we upped our game and tried to get back into it. It was a tough battle for the rest of the half. We spent long spells in their half but just couldnt get a score. Terenure rounded the game off with a late drop goal. Final Score 3-22.

Credit to the lads for keeping the fight going right til the end. Its just a pity that we can up short on the night after such a great season.

Many thanks to Pikey, and from the U21's The Fridge and Murphy for playing on the night.

Thanks to coaches Ian Murray, Ian McCarthy, Andy Fitzpatrick and captain Anthony O'Hanlon for all the hard work put in throughout the season. Thanks also to the players for putting it in week in week out.

Our numbers this season were very good. We had enough to fill two teams over the course of the season. We had a number of J5 B Friendlies. Thanks to Hugh Hogan for players some of his U21's in these games.

We have one more competition on the Saturday 14 May to finish the season off. It is the D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz.

After so many years with this group of players we finally won that league title. Let's hope for more of the same over the next few seasons.

D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz 2011

On Saturday the 2011 D.P. Smyth J5 Blitz took place in Templeville Road. The mixed weather did not dampen the spirits of the five teams taking part. They were hosts St Mary’s College RFC, Terenure, Tallaght, DLSP and CYM.

The pool games were very competitive, with the local Dublin 6W Neighbours making it to the final once again. This was a strongly fought match. An early try by Terenure proved to be the winning score of the game and see them take the 2011 Title.

Two grandson’s of D.P. Smyth, Colin Smyth and Alan Godfrey, who both played for St Mary’s on the day, were on hand to present the cup to Terenure.

It proved to be an enjoyable and successful competition in 2011. The 2012 Competition is already eagerly being looked forward to.
