Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Training Program, offered by the Department of Biological Sciences, is a 12 month program that enables students to obtain a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certificate from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), as well as a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License issued by the California Department of Public Health. The program requires 52 weeks of continuous training. Students spend 32 hours a week training on site at one of our hospital affiliates, and 8 hours a week taking part in formal coursework online. Note: Although we have trainee cohorts every Fall and Spring, some hospitals do not participate in each cycle.
Approval and Accreditation
The SJSU CLS Training Program is approved by Laboratory Field Services, a division of the California Health and Human Services Agency Department of Public Health.
Graduates of the Program are approved to take the national ASCP MLS Certification Board Exam.
The Program is accredited by the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS)
