6th GRADE LESSONS

Every other week, 6th grade students will have a 30 minute library mini-lesson from one of our 4 Units: Empowered Learner, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, or Digital Citizenship units.

Week 1: Orientation

Week 2: Book Fair Books & Nutmeg Nominees

Today we will watch the Fall Elementary School Author Videos for the featured books at this year's Scholastic Book Fair.

Week 3: Typing.com

Today we will create our Perry Hill Typing.com accounts so you can practice your typing skills and build muscle memory in your fingers.

Week 4: Using DESTINY to locate Fiction books

In this lesson, we will review how to locate books by author and title and learn how to tell what Lexile they are!

In this lesson, you will learn what banned books are and sample a few that we have in our library.


Week 6: Finding Nonfiction using the Dewey Decimal Classification system

Today we will do a webquest that will help you understand the Dewey Decimal Classification system and how it works so you can more easily locate Nonfiction books.

Week 7: Reading Code

Most developers want to focus on writing code rather reading it, not realizing that reading code is also an important skill to have. ... To be able to write good code, you have to read a lot of good code. This way you can learn how other developers think and how they solve a particular problem and where they lack. Today you will practice reading code in a fun game like way!

Week 8: Hour of Code

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Week 9: Keyboarding

Today we will take a midyear typing test to measure our progress toward our typing speed goal.

In this unit, students will explore writing code, using coding constructs such as loops and IF/ELSE statements.

In this unit, students will have hands-on lessons on STEM topics, such as building and engineering, robotics, circuits and electronics, and 3D printing.


Week 17: Keyboarding

In this lesson, students will complete their final typing test and then practice typing by racing their friends in Nitrotype.
