5th GRADE LESSONS

Every other week, 5th grade students will have a 30 minute library mini-lesson from one of our 4 Units: Empowered Learner, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, or Digital Citizenship units.

Week 1: Orientation

Week 2: Book Fair Authors & Titles, Review of Fiction Genres

Today we will watch the Fall Elementary School Author Videos for the featured books at this year's Scholastic Book Fair.

Week 3: Typing.com

Today we will create our Perry Hill TYPING.COM accounts so you can practice your typing skills and build muscle memory in your fingers .

Week 4: Using DESTINY to Locate Fiction Books

Use the libraryĹ› online catalog DESTINY to locate fiction books by title, author, and Lexile number. Use DESTINY to browse through book titles and read their descriptions.

Week 5: Keyboarding Tips & Techniques

Today we will learn some tips and techniques to improve your keyboarding.

Week 6: Non-Fiction Dewey Decimal Numbers

Today we will learn about the Dewey Decimal Classification system and how it works so you can more easily locate Nonfiction books.

Week 7: Using Primary Sources

Today we will learn how Thanksgiving became a national holiday by examining primary and secondary sources and learning how they tell about historical events.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Today you will join millions of students and teachers in over 180 countries in an hour of code activity.

Weeks 9-12: Coding

In these lessons, we will learn what sequential algorithms are and create code for them. We will also learn about debugging and variables.

Week 10: Keyboarding

In today's lesson, we will take a midyear typing test to see our progress toward our goal speed. We will also review a touch typing technique.

Weeks 13-16: Makerspace

In these lessons, we will experience hands-on STEM topics, such as building and engineering, robotics, circuits and electronics, and video and animation.


Week 17: Keyboarding

In this lesson, we will take our final typing test and have fun racing our friends in Nitrotype.

In this lesson, we will learn what copyright is and how not to plagiarize.


Weeks 19-21: Internet Safety

There are some very important safety tips you need to keep in mind when you are on the computer at home or at school. Use these tools to learn safety advice and tips for going online.
