Travelling to Sheffield by Air

Sheffield itself does not have an airport but there are four international airports less than 1.5 hours away by car.

Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster is around 45 minutes away by car (~40 miles) and is served by a number of charter flight routes to European destinations. This rather small airport is less well served by public transport but useful information how to get from the airport to/from Sheffield can be found here.

Manchester Airport, Leeds/Bradford Airport and East Midlands Airport are all three about 1 to 1.5 hours drive from Sheffield.

Manchester Airport is one of the busiest UK airports and is served by many domestic and international carriers. It is about 45 miles away from Sheffield and is well connected by public transport. There is a regular direct train service to Sheffield (during the day every hour with no change; more frequent with one change at Manchester Piccadilly in Manchester city centre). The airport train station is part of the airport campus with easy access to all three airport terminals. Furthermore, there is a direct coach service from the airport to Sheffield City Centre by National Express Coaches several times a day.

Leeds Bradford Airport and East Midlands Airport near Nottingham are also served by European and long haul destinations. Leeds Bradford Airport is about 45 miles away from Sheffield, East Midlands Airport about 55 miles. By public transport, Sheffield can be reached

  • from Leeds Bradford Airport by using a taxi service or bus (e.g. Flying Tiger Buses) to Leeds Station and then train to Sheffield. F
  • from East Midlands Airport, by taking the airport shuttle to East Midlands Parkway and then train to Sheffield. Alternatively, there is a direct coach service from East Midlands Airport to Sheffield City Centre by National Express Coaches several times a day.

Both London airports (Heathrow (~175 miles from Sheffield) and Gatwick (~210 miles from Sheffield) are reasonably accessible by public transport: direct trains from Sheffield to London St Pancras followed by for example, London Underground, Airport Express trains, Thameslink. Both airports are linked with Sheffield via a direct coach service by National Express Coaches several times a day.
