Collection Development

Brevard Public Schools Library Collection Policy

The library media program provides appropriate, accurate and current resources in all formats to meet the needs of the learning community. In an outstanding library media program, there is extensive evidence of current resources (print, non-print, & electronic) that are very responsive to curricular and recreational needs. These resources also reflect the school’s cultural diversity.

Objectives of the Selection Process

The responsibility for the selection of instructional materials rests with the certified school library media specialist. The selection of media is a continuous and cooperative process involving administrators, staff, students and parents. The primary objective of instructional materials and equipment shall be to enrich, support, and implement the educational program of the school. As the center of the educational program, the LMC provides materials and services that meet academic, technical, personal, and social needs of the school community.

To this end, the School Board of Brevard County subscribes to the principles laid down in the Library Bill of Rights and affirms that it is the responsibility of the school library media center to support these principles.

The Objectives for Selection are:

NOTE: The district does not maintain a list of approved books or videos. Rather, the objectives and criteria for selection should guide the certified library media specialist in collection development for each school

Criteria for Selection

Materials considered for purchase are selected based on the following criteria:

Areas that Require Special Consideration

Selection Aids

Selection aids are available on the web and through the Media Resource Teacher. They include, but are not limited to:

Florida State Statute Compliance

Section 1006.28(2)(d) of the Florida Statutes requires consultation with school community stakeholders in the purchasing of new library media materials. All stakeholders should be given an opportunity for input.  In Brevard Public Schools, each school's School Advisory Council serves to allow stakeholders the opportunity to review the book list and offer input.

Florida Statute 1006.28(2)(e)3. states that each superintendent must submit to the department a report that identifies each material that the school district received an objection to and each material that were removed or discontinued as a result of an objection. The department then must publish the list of materials that were removed or discontinued as a result of an objection. Brevard Public Schools Library Media Specialists refer to this list as part of their selection procedures.
