Today, we will learn about the Rectangular Marquee tool. This tool makes a rectangular selection on an image, which can then be used to cut, copy, fill, or crop the selected area.
You will also learn to duplicate the selected layer or a copied selection onto a new layer by clicking command/ctrl + J.
Finally, you will learn how to flip an image!
Create a folder on desktop called "Puzzles"
On a Mac: Drag the "Tin Man Puzzle Pieces" full image directly to your PS ICON
On Windows:
Create a new document in PS (8x10in, 300ppi)
Right click on the puzzle pieces and copy or save as...
Open tin man puzzle pieces in PS document
In the tool presets, you can adjust how the selection will be made: new selection (one), add to selection (multiple), subtract from selection, and intersect with selection.
ONE: Click and drag your MARQUEE tool as perfectly as possible around ONE puzzle piece.
Click command/ctrl + d to deselect something
TWO: Click COMMAND or CTRL and the letter J
*NOTICE… you now have a new layer with that one piece on it!
THREE: CLICK BACK ON THE BACKGROUND LAYER!!!!
Click and drag your MARQUEE tool as perfectly as possible around ANOTHER puzzle piece.
Click COMMAND/CTRL and the letter J again...
FOUR: CONTINUE THESE STEPS UNTIL ALL 6 PIECES are on their own separate layer.
DO NOT CHANGE THE SIZE OF ANY PUZZLE PIECE!
1. Click on the move tool
2. In the tool preset make sure to turn on Auto Select
3. Click on a puzzle piece to move it around.
4. To ROTATE a puzzle pieces, click on that puzzle piece, then click COMMAND T.
Move your mouse to the corner of that puzzle piece, notice the arrow will curve. You will be able to rotate the image from the CORNER.
ONE PIECE needs to be flipped! To do this, click on that layer, go to:
EDIT >TRANSFORM >FLIP HORIZONTAL
When you have completed this puzzle go to:
FILE > SAVE AS A COPY > TINMAN format as JPEG
Save to your "Puzzles" folder
STEP 1: Drag the Pumpkin Puzzle Pieces image directly into PS ICON
NOTE:
For this puzzle, we will be using the OBJECT SELECTION TOOL
REMINDER 1:
IF NEEDED: Change the size of the tool so it is smaller and fits INSIDE the puzzle piece. To change the size of the selection tool, click the LEFT BRACKET on your keyboard to make the tool smaller, click the RIGHT BRACKET to make the selection bigger
REMINDER 2:
To add or subtract from a selection, click between these three tool presets.
You need to seperate each puzzle piece to be able to put them back together!
STEP 2: Object selection tool, Click on ONE puzzle piece using the object selection tool, make sure all the of the piece is selected.
Click COMMAND/CTRL and the letter J
NOTICE… you now have a new layer with that one piece on it!
STEP 3: CLICK ON THE BACKGROUND LAYER!!!!
REPEAT
> Click on ANOTHER puzzle piece using the object select tool, make sure all the of the piece is selected.
> Click COMMAND/CTRL and the letter J
NOTICE… you now have a new layer with that one piece on it!
> CLICK ON THE BACKGROUND LAYER!!!!
> CONTINUE THESE STEPS UNTIL ALL 14 PIECES are on their own separate layer.
STEP 4: Moving, Placing and Rotating the Puzzle Pieces:
Click on the BACKGROUND layer and turn the view (eyeball) off to see if you have all your pieces selected.
DO NOT CHANGE THE SIZE OF ANY PUZZLE PIECE!
STEP ONE: Click on the move tool
DO NOT CHANGE THE SIZE OF ANY PUZZLE PIECE
STEP TWO: In the tool preset make sure to turn ON "Auto Select"
STEP THREE: Click on a puzzle piece to move it around.

MAKE YOUR OWN PUZZLE!
The best puzzle will be used in class for next year's students!!
Directions:
Pick a photo you have taken that you are proud of that has a good exposure and a clear image, OR use a photo you found online that has a clear and school appropriate image.
Using the marquee selection tool you will make "pieces" for the puzzle.
Open your image in PS
Make a selection, and click command and J - your piece will pop up on a new layer.
You may wonder how you will know how to make your pieces without overlap...
CLICK ON YOUR BACKGROUND so it is HIGHLIGHTED
TURN THE EYEBALL OFF of BACKGROUND
Make a new selection in the empty area.
Click command and J.
Notice the new puzzle piece POP UP on a new layer!
CLICK ON THE BACKGROUND LAYER, (STILL NOT VISIBLE!)
Make a new selection in the empty space, Click command J
Select the background layer again... Continue until the entire image is visible
Keep the background layer OFF (eyeball is not selected)
NEXT:
Go to the crop tool: expand your frame by 2 inches in each direction.
Now, click on your move tool
Rearrange and rotate the pieces.
Make sure no pieces overlap!

TRANSFORM
FLIP HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL
FINALLY:
When you are finished:
File > Save As a Copy > JPEG
Save to your "Puzzles Folder" on your desktop.
Submit on Canvas
Make sure you submit the original photo (JPEG) as well!
Extra time? Find another student who has finished their puzzle and switch computers to complete their puzzle!
