Local WAI Program Information
SDUHSDs WAI program is one of the few in the state that includes support for middle school students.
WAI is not a special education service, it is a support program only.
Number of students that must be "served" by SDUHSD per year to remain in good standing with the CDE:
Middle School - 278 - In 2018, SDUHSD served 383 middle school students.
High School - 507 - In 2018, SDUHSD served 671 high school students.
Number of students that must be "placed" by SDUHSD per year to remain in good standing with the CDE:
District Wide - 126 - In 2018, SDUHSD placed 129 students
State WAI Program Information
WAI is the largest education related grant awarded by the State of California - it is managed by the California Department of Education (CDE).
The State of California is divided into five separate WAI regions - San Diego County is a part of region 5 along with San Bernardino, Riverside and Imperial Counties.
There are three other types of WorkAbility programs in California:
WorkAbility II - Supports adult schools and ROPs (collaboration between education agency and CA Department of Rehabilitation).
WorkAbility III - Supports community colleges (collaboration between education agency and CA Department of Rehabilitation).
WorkAbility IV - Supports California State Universities (collaboration between education agency and CA Department of Rehabilitation).
WAI follows-up with students for 1 year after graduation (CA State Indicator 14).
