1997-1998 SEASON
16-13 CIF SD Quarterfinalists
schools first ever playoff victory.
1997-98 was a good year for LCC. The Holiday Hoop Tournament had
a very strong field and LCC again made it to the finals. Matt Adams and
Brian Faulstich led us to a key early victory against Carson of Los
Angeles and Joe Johnson led LCC to a victory against highly rated
Eisenhower of Rialto in the semi-finals. Eisenhower was 23-4 that year
and we beat them by 24. Their worst defeat of the year. We lost to Santa
Margarita in the finals. They were the State Champions for Division 3 in
California that year. Matt Adams and Brian Faulstich were first team
all-tournament selections.
LCC ended up 3rd in a very tough conference again. Highlights were
victories on the road against El Camino and Oceanside who were 1st and
2nd in our conference. Point guard Joe Johnson was injured the day of
the opening game of the season and missed all but 2 of the first 12
games which really hurt us for the first month. Once the club got
healthy they went 11-3 the rest of the way. LCC qualified for the CIF
playoffs for the first time. They got their first CIF playoff victory as
a school in dramatic fashion. Matt Adams scored 21 points and Joe
Johnson hit a 15 foot jumper at the buzzer to defeat Morse High School
by one point. A wild celebration ensued on the court and it became the
lead in for the Channel 9 news. The season ended with a loss at Helix
High. Matt Adams and Joe Johnson were selected first team all-league.
