Wrestling Rules:
Technical superiority: Technical Superiority is a 10 point lead
Throws: 4 points for all throws. All standing to back situations are now 4 pts.
Par Terre: Any penalty imposed for a false start will receive 1 point. If a wrestler flees the mat in the par terre position, the wrestling is resumed in the centre of the mat, in the par terre position. If the bottom wrestler false starts, there is a warning. If this infraction is repeated, the wrestler is cautioned and the top wrestler will receive 1 point.
Takedown: From the standing or neutral position, whenever a wrestler secures control of his/her opponent and brings him down without back exposure, 2 points are awarded. This may occur as either an offensive or defensive maneuver
Exposure: When you take your opponent from their stomach towards their back and pass 90 degrees, called back exposure, 2 points are awarded.
What is NOT allowed during a match?
Cautions are given by the referee during a match so that better wrestling is encouraged. Too many cautions will cost you points and possibly the match.
You are not allowed and will be cautioned if you:
• hit, kick bite
• have a head lock (without an arm)
• are being too passive (not initiating)
• touch your opponent’s face (eyes, nose, mouth)
• hurt your opponent by executing a move where an “unnatural” angle or position or unnecessary stress is put on their joints
• are not “opening up”, preventing your opponent from engaging in a move
• having both your elbows and or both hands tucked in under your chest during ground wrestling
• blocking with your head or body in while standing
Tapping out forfeits the match if you are in pain at the risk of physical injury.
Will I get hurt?
You will get bumps, bruises, scrapes and mat burns.
To minimize the risk of being hurt and hurting others badly.
• no fooling around is allowed
• do not attempt a difficult move without being taught how first
• pay attention during practice
• even the most experienced wrestlers can get hurt while wrestling against someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing
• wrestle those in or close to your weight class
• attend practices!!!!
EACH PRACTICE IS IMPORTANT AND PART OF THE FOUNDATION FOR THE NEXT DAY.
What you need for practice (in addition to shorts, shirt, running shoes and swimsuit/bodysuit for girls)
• thin neoprene knee pads (optional)
• neoprene elbow pads (optional)
• if you have/had braces or caps you might want a mouth guard from your orthodontist (to protect your (parents’) investment)
