Our spelling program is unique in that it allows students to learn words at their developmental level. It challenges students to do their best with a more individualized approach.
We will start the year with a diagnostic spelling assessment (don't worry, studying is not required). Students will then be placed into groups and each group will have a different list of words. The diagnostic test will be given additional times throughout the year, as needed, to monitor progress and developmental levels.
Each Monday your child will receive a list of words for the week along with a practice assignment titled "Three Times Each Homework." Students will study their spelling words at home throughout the week. The "Three Times Each Homework" assignment is due on Friday each week. ( If we do not have school on Friday, this assignment will need to be returned to school on Thursday.)
Students will also have class time to work with their spelling words with the teacher using word sorts as well as a variety of independent assignments on KidsA-Z. Students may also use www.kidsa-z.com to practice their words at home, if desired. To easily access the website, click the "Our Favorite Links" tab and select KidsA-Z. Spelling work should be completed in class. However, if in-class assignments are not completed in class, they will be sent home as homework.
To summarize:
MONDAY:
An individualized list of words for the week is sent home to study along with a study guide to help students understand the encoding strategies and skills needed to learn each word.
In class, each child will have word sort assignments and word practice online with www.KidsA-Z.com.
"Three Times Each Homework" will be worked on throughout the week at home and is due by Friday each week. This assignment directs students to write the words in pencil, crayon, and marker. That is up to the child. If he/she would prefer to simply write all words in pencil, that is totally fine (and actually easier to do).
FRIDAY:
Spelling Test (in class)
