Math

In second grade, we will master our addition and subtraction facts at least to twelve.  Please practice these each night at home. On the Favorite Websites page, I have many online math games your child can use at home to help practice these facts in a fun and challenging way.  Students who are fluent with math facts (can recite facts without having to calculate answers), will have a much easier time with multiplication and division.  After addition and subtraction facts are memorized, students will move on to learning multiplication and division facts.

Our fluency with addition and subtraction facts will help us solve multiple-digit numbers both with and without regrouping.  We will also become confident and skilled with telling and writing time (both digital and analog), working with money, understanding and using measurements, identifying and describing 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes, as well as reading and creating graphed or charted data. We will be able to write and understand numbers in many formats and be able to apply our math skills to solve real-world story problems.  We will also be able to explain why and how we solved a math problem and talk with each other about multiple strategies to solve the same problem.

Math is a hands-on, fun, relevant learning experience, and our second grade students enjoy celebrating their successes as we grow and learn.
