Every day, we will be working through phonics and phonemic awareness lessons to build on and strengthen our decoding skills. We will expand and strengthen the foundational skills built in kindergarten and first grade, so larger and more challenging words can be decoded, read, and understood. We will work on identifying the sounds in a word; learning the different spelling patterns that can create those sounds (encoding); adding, deleting, and changing individual sounds in words; understanding the meaning of word parts; and, understanding and using syllable patterns. We will learn how to decode multi-syllabic words as well as study the meaning of both words and parts of words. We will work to expand our vocabulary knowledge as well as our ability to accurately and confidently use these words in our writing.
In addition to our foundational phonics skills, we will build our text analysis skills. We will read both fiction and nonfiction books deeply and repeatedly to understand what the author is trying to communicate. We will analyze plot, characters, a story's problem & solution, and an author's purpose. We will compare and contrast books and book characters to understand different points of view and make connections to our text. We will learn about text features in nonfiction books and how these help us learn and understand facts and information. We will learn how to identify the main idea of a text or section of text and be able to retell that information to others. We will be able to explain the difference between a detail and a main idea in a text and understand how details support a text's main idea. We grow tremendously as readers in second grade, and we have a lot of fun learning in the process!
