Philosophy and Structure

The DCS Preschool learning environment enables children to acquire social, emotional, motor, language, and cognitive skills that are the foundations for success in Kindergarten and beyond.

We strive to work with our students and their families to meet children where they are, developmentally, and move them forward.

The following beliefs make up the philosophy and essence of our classroom environment:

- Each child develops and grows at a different rate, and they gain skills in different areas at different times.

- Each child is unique and each is appreciated and valued for his or her individuality.

- Each child learns differently, is curious, and is naturally excited to learn.

- Play is the work of children, and through play, children learn and grow.

- Social interaction is an essential piece of learning. Children learn through talking, playing, and watching each other.

- Children benefit from a rich learning environment that fosters exploration. Discovery is essential in helping young children learn basic skills.

The DCS Preschool Program is designed as an activity-based program, geared toward meeting children at their current developmental levels and encouraging progress and success. Classroom activities are designed by teachers and therapists to focus on children's needs in a variety of skill areas such as math, literacy, social, language, gross and fine motor, self care, and play skills.

Our classroom schedule includes whole group activities such as circle time, read alouds, and outdoor play, as well as small group activities with foci such as math, literacy, fine motor and social skills.

Our daily schedule also includes free play opportunities, music, and movement.
