Need to Know Info
Our preschool program is made up of four classes.
Currently, we have two classes of 3 to 4 years old students and two classes of 4 to 5 year old students.
Mrs. Stanley is the lead teacher of the morning classes and Mrs. Fortier lead teaches in the afternoon classes.
We have both morning and afternoon classes
3-4 year-olds: 2 days per week- Tuesday and Thursday mornings or afternoons
4 -5 year-olds: 3 days per week- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings or afternoons
Our preschool program follows the DCS School Calendar, with the exception of our start and end dates, which typically are 1-2 days after the DCS start date and 1-2 days before the DCS end date.
It is important for children to have consistent attendance as much as is possible. We understand that health issues and illness occur, so please use your judgment and keep children home as needed for this reason. If a child has a fever, he or she must be fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If your child will be absent for any reason, please call or email Mrs. Fortier or Mrs. Stanley.
What to Bring
Please send your child to school with a backpack big enough to fit a standard size pocket folder (we'll provide one). In the backpack please include the folder, and a change of clothes in case of an accident or spill. If your child is still learning to use the bathroom, please keep toileting supplies (including wipes) in his or her backpack. While we don't regularly go out to play once the playground is covered in snow, we do go out at times for nature walks. Please send children with coats, hats, and mittens each day. Once there is snow on the ground, each child must bring a change of shoes to keep our floors and rugs clean and dry. Please ensure all footwear is sturdy and ready for playing. Flip flops and other backless shoes are not allowed. If you have questions, please let us know.
Drop Off and Pick Up
The morning classes meet in the Main Lobby at the beginning of class. Please park in the flagpole circle and cross in the crosswalk to enter the front doors of the school. Wait between the two sets of blue doors, where a preschool staff member will greet you with the sign-in sheet between 7:50 and 8:00. At pick up, families can meet preschoolers in the Main Lobby at the end of class.
The afternoon classes meet in the Main Lobby at the beginning of class. Families are asked to wait between the sets of double blue doors until preschool staff arrive with the sign in sheet. At 2:30 pick up, parents are asked to pull around behind the school in line. Children are brought out in groups as cars pull up.
Tuition is due by the first day of each month. Checks may be made out to the Deerfield Community School, with the student's name in the memo line. Please send cash in an envelope labeled with your child's name. Tuition can be placed in backpacks, given to preschool staff, or to the Main Office. Currently, tuition is:
$65.00 per month for 2-day classes
$85.00 per month for 3-day classes
Our classroom follows the community snack model, where children have a turn approximately once per month to bring in a snack and drink for the whole class. We ask that only healthy snacks are sent in, and we will send home a list of suggestions and ideas. We schedule a snack day as close to a birthday as possible, when it occurs during the school year, and children are welcome to bring something non-edible (such as stickers, pencils, bubbles, etc.) to give out to their classmates if they wish. Snack schedules will be sent home bi-monthly. Please remember that if our classroom is a peanut and tree nut free zone this year, snacks may not contain nuts of any kind. If your snack requires utensils or plates or bowls, please send them also. We will let you know ASAP if this is the case.
While we don't send home a student supply list in the summer, we may have a class wish list or need for certain supplies not covered by the general budget. If you are willing to contribute, let us know. We can let you know when a need arises. We appreciate your help!
Scheduled Early Release Days verses Snow Days or Delayed Openings
~ In the case of a scheduled Early Release Day (meaning included on the year's school calendar), our program runs two shortened sessions, both in the morning (official times will be announced at the beginning of the year)
~In the case of a snow day when school at DCS is cancelled, preschool is also cancelled. Families are notified via a phone call or email from
the OneCallNow system our school has in place. This information is also usually available on local radio and television stations such as WMUR. ~In the case of a delayed opening due to inclement weather, the AM preschool class is cancelled, and in the case of an early release due to weather, the PM preschool class is cancelled.
Our daily schedule changes to accommodate special and recurring events and activities, however, a sample of our schedule looks like the following:
- Arrival: Children hang up their belongings, sign in, get ready for morning meeting.
- Morning Meeting: We begin each day with a greeting and/or song or message, then we discuss the day ahead.
- Free Choice & Learning Centers: Children take turns to complete a couple of direct instruction activities, and have the opportunity to make play choices around the room, depending on what is open for the day.
- Clean Up: Each child helps to clean up the classroom, working together to make sure all areas are finished.
- Circle: Circle time typically includes a story, songs, weather/calendar, and more!
- Wash Hands & Snack: Children help to set up snack, and the snack helper offers the snack he or she brought to each classmate.
- Book Look: While snack is wrapping up, children take time to quietly look at books independently, with a friend, or with an adult.
- Whole Group Time: The remainder of class is typically used for outdoor play, a gross-motor movement activity, or another whole-group activity, as time allows.
- Dismissal: We sing and say goodbye, and children get ready to go.
