EXPECTATIONS FRENCH I
MOST IMPORTANTLY
At Home:
Study 10-15 minutes a day, five days a week. If this amount of time studying is not helping you to learn the material well enough, meet with one of the French teachers during CavBlock so that we can assess if your studying technique needs tweaking or if you need to put in more than those 10-15 minutes.
In Class:
Listen with the intent to understand.
One person speaks at a time and the others listen.
Respect everyone.
Show me that you understand.
Involve yourself in class.
Ask questions.
Ask for help when needed.
Sit in a learning position.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS IN THE WORLD LANGUAGES CLASSES:
Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared with materials for class, to respect the teacher and fellow classmates, to participate during class, and to seek extra help (if needed) during CavBlock.
You should be on time, in your seat at the start of the period with your French material, and ready to work. I will mark you late unexcused if you come late to class without a pass. We will often have an activity that will be done right at the beginning of class.
Each student is responsible for him/herself including their missed work or future work they may be missing due to an expected absence.
All students are expected to make up their work as soon as possible. When a student is back to school after an excused absence, project, test, and quiz should be made up within 3 school days.
After an extended excused absence, students should meet with the teacher to discuss a plan to make up missing assignments.
Late-submitted formative or summative assignments are accepted within 3 days late with a communicated reason. ALL late assignments will receive a lower grade.
For the students’ benefit, a “0” will be entered for any missing assignment and will be replaced upon completion with an appropriate grade.
All students are expected to be a member of our class’ Google Classroom and to check it at least once a day.
Many assignments will be submitted on GOOGLE CLASSROOM unless otherwise specified (Voki, Voces, etc.)
All students will use THEIR SCHOOL EMAIL to communicate with the teacher.
There will be NO retake tests or retake quizzes or Extra credit assignments offered.
We learn through practice - we practice everyday - therefore, class attendance is very important.
Class participation is essential - it makes the class more fun and interesting.
We will do a lot of group activities (small and large) so working well with others, being motivated, and being supportive will create a positive environment.
Everyone will follow all school rules at all times- SEE Students Handbook
Personal Electronic Devices: In accordance with recently passed New Hampshire State Law, RSA 189:1-a , and the District’s commitment to a focused, respectful, and engaging learning environment, student use of personal electronic communication devices (including but not limited to cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and headphones) is prohibited from when the first bell rings to start instructional time until the dismissal bell rings to end the school day.
a) First Offense: Verbal warning
b) Second Offense: Confiscation of the device for the remainder of the period.
c) Third Offense: The electronic communication device will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. A disciplinary referral will be written. The student's parent/guardian must pick up the device from the principal’s office.
d) Fourth and Subsequent Offenses or Refusal to Comply: Progressive discipline based on the Code of Conduct. A parent meeting will be held with the administration. Repeated misuse may result in a student being required to check in their device daily.
17. We are in a fairly new building - it is very nice and I’m sure we all want it to
stay that way so we will not write on or damage any equipment or property.
18. You should also expect to speak, write, listen, and read often. We will do a lot
of speaking, and remember, this is a French class so we will speak French
and you’ll hear a lot of French! We all make mistakes; I make them as well!
Don't forget, we all learn from our mistakes. Effort is what is important - effort
leads to proficiency.
19. Finally, the most important thing is to do your best, I especially value an
excellent work ethic. It is also important to have a good time when learning.
So let's have FUN! French is a wonderful language and we will do a variety of
activities to keep the class interesting. With that said, let's work together to
have a great, successful year!
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is a particular point of emphasis in the foreign language department, as online translators/native speakers are a tempting option.
Intentional & unintentional plagiarism will not be tolerated.
This is a recommended website by the department: http://wordreference.com/. Mme Faucher rarely allows students to use this website during class; she prefers when students use a French/English dictionary from her classroom. You can use this website when you are home to complete an assignment you did not finish during class time.
What’s so bad about Google Translate anyway? By Elisa Kirschhoffer- PLEASE READ!!!
OTHER INFORMATION:
All students need a binder with loose lined paper for their notes, list of vocabulary, grammar information, handouts, rough drafts, practice activities, etc.
A Weekly Agenda will be posted in Google Classroom at the end of each week. Students should check the Agenda daily to see what we are doing in class and what’s assigned.
ALL important documents will be linked on the Weekly Agenda to give students easy access to all handouts with activities and information.
Most handouts will be accessible electronically on the Weekly Agenda that ALL students will be able to find in their French I Google Classroom.
When students read a novel, an article, a poem, etc. for most reading activities, students will write their own vocabulary list. They will write the English meanings of each word, phrase or expression as well. A list of vocabulary will also be provided.
For the vocabulary/grammar learned, students should make flashcards- “des cartes mémoires” to help them study and retain the vocabulary. Using Quizlet to study vocabulary is also recommended.
There will be quizzes and tests. Those will be mainly on paper and some might be Google Forms. NO NOTES will be allowed and NO RETAKES!
Students should use the study guide and/or quiz/test format in Google Classroom to help prepare and study for a quiz/test.
Most graded writen assignments will be on paper. NO ELECTRONIC devices will be allowed to complete those assignments.
Enough class time will be allotted to complete most assignments. Most assignments can be done during class time when the time provided is well managed by students.
ALL students can always use CAVBlock time to complete assignments.
The midterm and final will likely be project based with a presentation.
